Anyone used Mermaid boards in a bathroom instead of tiling

Bathroom is the last room in our house to be renovated. It is a big project and we are having various people come round to give ideas and quotes.

Origionally we were going to tile the whole area. with mosaic tiles. but every single tiler has run out of the house screaming

have had mermaid board mentioned a few times now as an alternative.. any used it , got any opinions or pros/cons ?

thanks

we have it in the shower
easy to fit
easy to clean
ours doesn't look like its tryin to be stone

we had our downstairs bathroom done with them and the end result looks fantastic, easy to clean as no silly grout, just wipe down.
when they were 1st put up there was a really slight error in the pattern, so slight i did not notice, my builder did. but the company came straight out that day to see and they were swopped the next day, hassle free.
highly recommend, when we can afford to get the upstairs bathroom done we will definately use them!
hope this helps

We used this in our bathroom in our last house. Its okay !! We were hoping for the hotel type look, but found the edging strips not great, if you want to do something straight from floor to ceiling like a shower cubicle, then it should be okay. Any tricky cutting means you need the edging strip and works out expensive, metal edging strip is also quite tricky to cut yourself to get a nice finish.
We used it, but would never use it again.
We got ours from a company in Cardiff. Llandaff way, very reasonable price compared to bigger companies. I think they deliver to other companies and parts of the UK.

ok, thank you all, that is really , really helpful. thanks for negative as well as positives

the area we were looking to tile is really large, and the mermaid board would be easier to keep clean and far easier to install i think

we are going to go and have a look at it in a local shop

it would be for a shower area and round a bath too...

thanks again x

Agree with pruners looks a bit naff

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 17/03/2009 18:59

We have it in our bathroom and love it. Ours is deep green, not fake stone effect. Much easier to keep clean than tiles. Ours is round our bath and shower and has been in place for four years or so with absolutely no problems. It was quick and easy to install compared with tiling and I would have no hesitation in using it again.

My parents had their bathroom done a couple of years ago and I have to admit that at first I was a bit when mum said that they were getting panels instead of tiles. It looks great though, especially as the bathroom is quite small so it makes it less busy, iykwim.

They have the boards behind the shower cubicle, the rest is tiled.

Lulumama · 17/03/2009 19:50

thank you all for your comments, so far the positives are outweighing the negatives

am interested to know how it looks 'naff'? does it look too faux?

I have this (or something similar) in our shower cubicle. We went for plain white so it doesn't look naff at all - we have painted the walls white too so it blends in well.

We live in a hard water area and it is a real problem keeping grout clean so far better from that pov.

Next door had this done and it looks fab. Then my dad did his entire small bathroom in it too and it looks wonderful, very sleek, easy to clean, like a hotel bathroom. He did his himself and it was quite easy.Neither bathroom has a stone effect, they are both a very pale grey/white and I was very impressed with how good it looks when installed.
