Moving to ST ALBANS - which are the nice areas please?

My DH's office is relocating to Hertfordshire and we are thinking about moving to St Albans as have been a couple of times in the past (to the centre) and it seemed really nice. Heard nice things about it too. Problem is, I am looking at estate agents online but I don't know which areas are nice/safe/friendly (for bringing kids up) and it would save a lot of time if I had some idea of where's nice rather than wasting a lot of time (as we don't live near there at the moment).

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I am out of date with this forum but just wanted to up date.

My son goes to Garden Fields very happy but just changing head teachers this September. Aboyne Lodge - not unless you live really local but very unlikely to get in.
Maple is very good academic school centre of town.

Best to live near to a secondary school I think that is the struggle to get in at the moment as far as I am aware Beaumont, Sandringham are very good, however all have something to offer if the kiddie wants to learn that is. Also all very difficult to get in I'd opt for Harpenden and St Georges.

Parminter very good but have to pass an entrance exam.

Be prepared very expensive here even McDonalds is more expensive than other McDs in the UK!!!!

Hi I know this is an old post but wanted to ask for people's advice on where to live in St Albans if I want to be near the train station but great for families?
Any views on Jersey farm/marshalwick area?
Thanks x

If you can afford it, i would say that Avenue Road is the best bet, that way you stand a chance of getting into Maple. Most people I know only chose private for under 11 if they couldn't get into one of the good state schools, more of a back up plan than a first choice.

Thanks for the post chickenkatsu 😀 Do you have a view on jersey farm/marshalwick area near sandringham school? Also any view on cottonmills? Thanks again!

Chickenkatsu · 07/07/2017 13:00

Cottonmill can be a little rough in places, I once saw a sixty odd year old man getting beaten up really badly by two twenty something men. Fortunately his friend was already calling the police. It probably is one of the best places to buy in the long run because of the shortcut to the station. I know that Sandridge is really good for schools but I haven't spent much time there.

Thanks again chickenkatsu x

You'll need to drive or cycle to the station from Marshalswick. Don't rely on the buses - if they don't run to the Uni they are crap.

I love close by to Marshalswick and it's very family friendly.

Jersey Farm, Marshalswick areas are very popular with families on account of the good schools both primary and secondary in the area. There is a bus to the station, some people cycle too.

Tiffany4 · 07/07/2017 15:35

Thanks notonthestaira and laramara, would you say jersey farm is a nice area then even if it's not as nice as marshalwick?
X

The houses in Jersey Farm can feel a bit packed in and it is a little bit out on a limb but it is nice and as far as I am aware safe. There is a little row of shops at Harvesters that would cover most basic needs and a park tucked away.

Depends on what you need and are looking for really.

Thanks notonthestairs x

Jersey Farm is a nice area, it's just that bit more affordable than Marshalswick yet still in the catchment area for good schools.
