You know those things that hold shelves up in bookcases............what could I use instead???

you know the little things - sometimes pins type things, sometimes little plastic things that stick into the side of the bookcase so the shelve fits on top.

I'm missing one from my bookcase and so of course the flipping shelve falls down if I try and put anything on it.

What could I use instead? Don't really want to buy a pack of them (presuming you can?) just for the sake of one............

I really don't think even a pack would be that expensive, to be honest, and if I recall correctly!

Otherwise you're looking at BBQ sticks!

JohnnyTwoHats · 05/03/2009 18:59

Have you got any Lego Technik? They have parts which are identical and I have previously used these to good effect
hello btw- not 'spoken' on here for an age! (am g i r a f f e s k i btw)

FAQinglovely · 05/03/2009 19:05

I know but to buy a pack I'll either need to get 2 taxis (nearly £7 there and back) or a bus and walk quite some distance (probably about 2hrs trip) to get to B&Q .

TH - yes I believe we do have some lego Technik ........should be in a HUGE box (full of lego and technik pieces - probably going into the 1000's with all bits together) in DS's room (as yet unpacked) - I may have a look in there once I've got DS2 and 3 to bed and see if he's got any of those parts - I know the type you mean.

What about little wooden dowell peg things? The ones that come with IKEA stuff when you buy it. I bet B&Q do something similar.

shelleylou · 05/03/2009 19:19

a screw works. wats holding 1 of the shelves on my tv cabinat up

PerArduaAdNauseum · 05/03/2009 19:21

DH suggests wedging in shortened matchsticks?

MmeLindt · 05/03/2009 19:21

you can get the ones for Ikea Billy shelves in Ikea for nothing. I can send you a couple if you want.

FAQinglovely · 05/03/2009 19:25

thank you everyone.

I shall look for the technik bits in a little while when I put DS2 and 3 down. If I can't find them I'll try the matchsticks, and if they don't work I'll have a look for a screw

one of them has to work - there's not going to be anything heavy on the shelve - probably just the DS's colouring things - up out of DS3's reach - I just want it to stay flat and not collapse

If these would do the job I have a few spare. More than happy to post them to you.

ohdearwhatamess · 05/03/2009 19:32

Should point out that they are brown plastic not metal (contrary to B&Q blurb)

FAQinglovely · 05/03/2009 19:32

ohdear - yeah those are the tupe on this bookcase.

I think I should be ok - one of the "diy" options on here should work. It's hidden in the corner of the room so no-one is going to notice lego/matchsticks/screw/whatever holding on corner up - I just want to put things on it and empty some boxes.

My housewarming/birthday party is a week tomorrow so I need to get sorted EEEK

Well if you change your mind or your DIY option doesn't work post back on here and I'll send them on.

FAQinglovely · 05/03/2009 19:42

thank you

FAQ- did you sort it out in the end?

Shitemum · 06/03/2009 21:48

Try these;

  • a very short, or sawn off, pencil end
- a short piece of fat twig
FAQinglovely · 06/03/2009 21:53

oh yes sorry meant to update last night but forgot - I did it with the technik bit - thanks for all your ideas
