Which wall to have as a feature wall?

I have just moved into a new house and initially painted it all magnolia just to smarten it up a bit (and it was cheap) when we moved in.

Now am fed up with it looking so bland so starting to decorate properly I think I have chosen the wallpaper I want as a feature wall in my living room

this

Am thinking of leaving the other walls magnolia as I think they will go still.

Not sure which wall to have as the feature wlall with the wallpaper on though, would it be the chimney breast that you see as soon as you walk into the room, or the back wall which the sofa's are up against. If I did the chimney breast would I paper the two walls either side of it or just the breast?

I am not very good at creative things so feel a bit lost with it all.

Don't have it at all - looks a bit naff, imo.

Noooooooooo feature walls are dreadful I went house hunting with my parents thus weekend Viewed 13 houses all with naff laura ashley feature walls Paint it a solid block colour and spend the paper money on a beautiful piece of art

Hmmm like I said decorating not my strong point. So would you paint the whole room one colour? At the moment it is entirely magnolia with dado rail which is glossed white running all round the room.

I really dislike the dado rail but my step-dad persuaded me to keep it up saying it might cause loads of damage to take it down.

Please help what shall I do with my room?

You could paint the area below the dado in a duck egg blue like in the paper design and then buy some nice prints in chunky white frames to match the dado.Plants and flowers and nice lighting also make a huge difference

Another option is to use wallpaper on a frame, so put it up as a picture instead, if you really want it. Saw that on Property Ladder and thought it a useful compromise between the indecision of what paper and how to paper.

Keep the dado rail.

Paint the chimney wall a block colour, not the alcoves.

Wall paper will go out of fashion very quickly and it's expensive.

agree that it would be better to have artwork than wallpaper - easier to change if you get bored of it and (can be) cheaper

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 02/03/2009 19:12

i would avoud wallpaper if you have ncie smooth walls as there is no going back without paying to have walls re skimmed (speaks from experience of just having hall re skimmed and it was torturous)

Very nice wallpaper you have chosen. I would paper the walls either side of the chimney breast & leave the chimney breast & hang a lovely big mirror on the chimney breast. Paint the dado rail the same colour as the walls if you can.

A house along the road from me has something similar to this as a feature wall - it looks crap for want of a better word.

Fimbo · 03/03/2009 14:22

Arrgh I take it back, I have found the exact one here. Hideous

piratecat · 03/03/2009 14:24

woah, that's some serious paper. ok on a groovytop/dress but not on your wall. God I'd get bored of it v quickly, and quited dizzy too!

piratecat · 03/03/2009 14:25
