Has anyone had white floorboards? Pros and cons?

Really can't decide whether to paint our floorboards white or not. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of them. Do they chip? Are they difficult to keep clean? Anything else I need to know?

Had a white painted staircase and yes it did chip and was difficult to keep clean. However, I think that some of the chipping might have been avioded if we had used better paint. Also might depend on whether you have any rugs over the top.

Did look good though.

Would they be in a high traffic area ?

I think it would be difficult to avoid the chipping, scuffing and marks unless you used a very hardwearing paint and then gave it many coats of varnish, even then I'm not sure they'd remain flawless.

I'd stay away from it unless you like the shabby chic look

Our bathroom has floorboards that are painted white. We're about to move (this weekend) and actually went out of my way not to have any wood/laminate flooring again.

Depending on the room I'd either carpet it or just put down lino/tiles. This is for the following reasons:

They chip

They shown all the dirt

It's nearly impossible to get an even finish with the paint.

I never really think the floor is clean

They are noisy

Draughty

OK so the last few reasons have nothing to do with the colour...

Mine show every hair, drip and bit of fluff, will never have white floors again.

Oh blimey, I am a terrible slattern, perhaps white floorboards aren't for me!
Thank you for advice

Had it in our old bathroom. A PITA. Always looked grubby. Strictly for interior design magazine spreads, methinks!

Can you not use a different colour? I had a mid grey colour in my other house, thought it looked quite good. Used International floor paint and it didn't chip.

I'm just about to do my living room floorboards and I've bought Farrow and Ball floor paint.

I know they will look scruffy in a couple of weeks but I like the shabby shit chic look, it fits with my crappy furniture.

I had it in the bedroom in the last house and the bathroom and it looked good even when it was scruffy.

It shows up pubes terribly though so you do have to keep your bathroom clean

WE stayed in a cottage that had white floorboards and they didn't look that chipped.

We painted our front room floorboards white...with mixed results. I love the sparseness of it, as I loathe carpet and all that lives in it.

But our boards are not of the best quality so are a little snaggly in places and draughty.

I had a piece of coir whipped and made into a rug which looks nice in the middle of the room on top of the boards. And I don't mind a bit of chipping..but prep properly and you shouldn't have a problem.

I wanted white floorboards, but as it was the loft extension there was none...so we went for a white laminate, with a teeny grain effect.

For a fairly basic/cheap product I am very pleased with it.

It is a fair bit quieter and def less draughty than floorboards, doesnt scuff and sweeps easily as it is smooth.

Good for a bedroom...not sure about for living areas though.

THey look lovely when first done, we've got it in our baby's room. However it is easily chipped and scuffed, IMHO if the floors are varnished and get a bit chipped they look weathered and 'rustic' white floorboards just look tatty!
