where is nice to live?

Hi,

My husband and I (along with our 2 babies) have decided to relocate. We currently live in a very nice leafy part of surrey and although we have a lovely 4 bed semi with garage etc we feel we would like a little more for our money, perhaps a detached home with a little land etc!

We know that we want to stay in the south of England but are looking for suggestions of nice family orientated places / towns to live and raise our young family, where house prices are not too high!

We understand this is a broad staring point but at this stage we are open to lots of suggestions until eventually we can narrow it down to a least a specific county! For the time being though we would like suggestions in Surrey / Kent / Hampshire / Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

Thanks in advance!

We relocated from NE Kent to Essex - we live in a very nice little village with excellent primary school and good Grammer sand local secondary school.

Social life isgreat in the village, school mums are friendly and our house is big and old and you get lots for your money round here.

los easy commute into Liverpool St.

Sorry moved from Kent as it was pricey and lots of hassle where we used to live and appalling secondary schools.

Have you not thought of Essex for a reason?

any websites that people can reccommend would also be very useful!

Buckingham & Winslow. Nice small towns, grammar schools, close to Milton Keynes but not too close.

Tenterden in Kent, very pretty, Kent is also grammar school county.

Winchester? No idea about prices though.

essex is great and excellent transport links into London

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 24/02/2009 14:51

look at this thread on Berkhamsted schools for some good ideas about areas

www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=education&threadid=700320-Berkhamsted-schools-help-please#14268369

I think this area is lovely (Berkamsted, Amersham, Chesham, Hemel, St Albans, Harpenden) - very close (and in) lovely countryside like the Chilterns and good state and private schools. Low crime. Nice communities.

samsonara · 24/02/2009 14:51

Don't know about those areas but South London has, Dulwich , Herne Hill borders is nice, you have the park, good schools and the village shops and it's easy to get to London Bridge on the Train, This road is within walking distance of the village and North Dulwich train station is close by

Ah you won't get detatched with garage for that though, sorry

sb6699 · 24/02/2009 14:56

I relocated to Herts/Essex border. Small towns, good transport links (bus, rail and air) and excellent schooling.

You would get a lovely house for £600,000.

Go to rightmove and check houses for sale CM23 area.

Above 3 pretty rural-lovely areas

brimfull · 24/02/2009 15:14

nice place up the road form me new forest, near ringwood ,hants dorset border.

great schools,nice market town

Amanda78 · 24/02/2009 15:30

ggirl,

we love the new forest - have been on many weekends trips. Love the rural setting but have never found anywhere where it is lively enough to feel like a home and not a holiday destination i.e nice country pubs, lots of camp sites with not much more!

Can you narrow it down any further to where I might focus on?

Thanks

we live in winchester, well just a few miles north, and it is lovely. the people are so nice and the centre is beautiful and very quaint. can be a little snooty sometimes though.
house prices aren't cheap, but might be worth a look and i think 600k is a generous budget!
agree with amanda - the new forest is lovely. parts of dorset are gorgeous too.

brimfull · 24/02/2009 15:57

Amanda-
Try Ringwood,Fordingbridge(much smaller than Ringwood)
Ringwood has lovely community feel, weekly market, tourists tend to stick to lyndhurst/lymington end of forest.
I love Lymington though as well.
