Has anyone brought a solid wood parquet floor back to life ?

Underneath old fitted carpets in my house is what has the potential to be a lovely wooden floor. I would guess that the carpets have benn down for about 15 years and the floor looks pale and dried out.

I guess the "right" thing to do would be sand it right down and re-wax, but does anyone have any experience of just feeding it with wax/polish? I don't have the stomach of the mess of sanding, or the budget to have it done professionally and TBH I'm not bothered about it being perfect. I just like the idea of a floor that can be swept properly in the hall and dining room and TBH with my lot, it'll soon look rough again even if I get it looking immaculate.

Any recommendation for the type of wax/product to use?

My mum discovered parquet flooring under the carpets in the house they moved into last October (why do I only discover woodworm when I lift my carpets ). Anyway, they paid to have it professionally restored, sanded, polished, repaired where necessary etc. It cost them £1,500 approx. for a hallway, lounge and dining room (average sized rooms, say 12' x 15'). It looks lovely but everyone has to levitate over it

Crikey, we didn't pay that much. Though tbf, it didn't take much sanding so that's where we might ahve saved money. Some idiot had sanded it a few years previously, never finished it properly so it was filthy. All our floor man had to do was a quick sand, then he varnished it (you can't see the varnish, it's a really natural finish).
