Do you have boiler insurance?

I have been using British Gas and their homecare agreement where you pay a set amount a month then you can call them out if your central heating or boiler breaks down. We have used them about 5 times in the last 3 years so I think we have got our monies worth. The prices have recently been put up to £20 a month and I'm wondering if its worth it as I have a £50 per call out fee that covers all parts and labour - like an excess.

So, do you have any insurance like this or do you just call a plumber out if you have any problems?

Trying to reduce our monthly outgoings but don't want to cut things that save us money in the long run

i would say it depends on how old your boiler is. I stopped paying the British Gas one and swapped for a Homecare ? which costs me £8.95 a month instead of £20 and is basically the same.

No, just call a plumber.

Ooh, can you link to the Homecare one, Waiting. We need to look around too.

Thanks

my boiler was installed before man landed on the moon, I don't think anyone would insure it

Yes we do, we have the BG one. It's great for peace of mind and have called them out lots of times for various plumbing issues.

I wouldn't have boiler insurance.
We are the most over-insured counrty in the western world.
Put your £20 in an account in case of emergencies. We did and had enough for a new boiler when the time came and have plenty left over if the washing machine/dishwasher/etc goes.

No we don't have BG cover.

We have an old boiler (will probably have to replace it sooner rather than later) and I doubt we have spent anything near the the £720 you have spent over the last 3 years for your cover, despite having had it fixed 2 or 3 times.

Our plumber almost ways comes within 24 hours and even lends us heaters if he can't get the heating fixed overnight. A friend of mine has had endless trouble getting BG to come out when she needs them, despite having cover so as far as I can see we get a better service too (that may be an area related problem though).

I think the trick is to find a good reliable pplumber and stick with them.

No, never needed to, my brother is a plumber, gas engineer and electrician so I just rope him in to do any work we need.

But if my brother wasn't then I would probably just put some money away every month for emergencies like that.

try this.

thanks for your replies.

We were stung in a previous house where the boiler repeatedly broke down and we had to replace one (costly) part after another and at the time wished we had cover.

Ours is 8 years old - no idea how that fairs in boiler age. The BG agreement is good in that they fix things on your tank as well , but I'm off no to look at Waitings link.

My DP is a heating engineer, and he is constantly telling me (and everyone else) that boilers are only designed to last 8 years (!).
However, being lucky enough to have a live-in boiler repair man, I am not well placed to say whether or not boiler insurance is a good bet...
