Does anyone know anything about leasehold agreements?

We're about to put our flat on the market, and I've been digging out the paperwork for it, I've found our leasehold agreement, but it's in the name of the previous owner. Does anyone know what happens when you buy a property leasehold. Do you just take over the old leasehold agreement? Should there be a leasehold agreement with my name on? Who would have that?
TIA

Hiya, I'm not sure. I don't really know anything about selling houses, never done it before. The estate agents have a firm of conveyencers they use, but I was just starting to get together some paperwork when I realised we don't have a copy of the leasehold agreement with my name on. I'm confused, should I have signed something when I bought the flat? It was over 12 years ago now, have no idea what I did all those years ago!

My job is to deal with the paperworj invovled in selling/buying/remortgaging houses and flats. The lease is probably ninety years long. The document stays in the names of the first people who bought the lease from the landlord. You will probably have a copy of a register showing your name are the "registered proprietor". I could do your conveyancing for you if you like. I work in Barking. Where are you based? Have you alredy put the flat on the market? If so your estate agents must have dicussed a Home Information Pack with you. I am happy to be called upon for advice.

Thanks for that, we're in Battersea, so across the other side of town to you. The flat isn't on the market yet, I was just trying to get myself organised first. The agents have quoted £200 for the HiP but haven't said anything more about it. They're coming here tomorrow at 11 to have a look around (one agent has already been to value it, the rest of the agents from the branch are coming with her tomorrow) so I can ask then about HiPs.

If you bought the flat 12 years ago and have a mortgage the lease etc might be with the Lender, for safe keeping. Even though the flat is in Battersea I could still do the conveyancing if you wnated. my firm's charges are usually £600 plus VAT for the sale of a flat but as a concession i'd do the job for your for £475 plus VAT. you can look me up on my firm's website. www.mlclaw.co.uk

Happy to try to help.
