Especially, but not only, in the Greater Manchester area. Were you happy with the results and would you recommend your supplier?

Have had sash windows replaced but company is in Bracknell.

magicfarawaytree · 08/02/2009 17:11

were you happy with the quality of the windows and the fitting. Also what type of wood did you have hard wood or soft? thanks

Can't recommend a supplier in your area, but we had replacement wooden sash windows in a Georgian house and we were really happy with the quality. They were hardwood. Looked fab, fitted beautifully.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T GO FOR UPVC (saw your other thread!) You would regret it forever.

nymphadora · 08/02/2009 18:57

We have had Everest windows. Expensive but don't go for their first price as they tend to have 'deals'. Good quality, have a guarantee etc

Littlefish · 08/02/2009 19:01

We had all of our windows replaced with hardwood casement windows about 18 months ago. They look great.

Violethill and verlapsedrunner - please can I be really cheeky and ask - how much were your replacement sash windows? We are putting in an offer on a victorian farmhouse which will need 6 large sash windows (the previous owners replaced them with hideous white UPVC monstrosities which I just want to rip out!!!!)

HeadFairy · 08/02/2009 19:02

We had our sashes replaced with hardwood ones... They are fabulous and we had them fitted with Pilkington K glass so they conform to building regs about double glazing. We're in London, so I can't recommend a company local to you.

HeadFairy · 08/02/2009 19:03

As far as I can remember, replacing 7 sash windows cost us about £7000 but the pilkington K glass is the expensive option.

Quattrocento · 08/02/2009 19:05

I feel quite strongly anti-UPVC but a lot of people like them, don't they?

HeadFairy · 08/02/2009 19:05

Me too, don't they give you terrible condensation problems?

Littlefish · 08/02/2009 19:12

We are in the Midlands HeadFairy, but thanks for the info. I had suspected they might be about £1,000 each. Tell me a bit more about the building regs and Pilkington K glass.....

Quattrocencto - almost every house round here has UPVC, but I hate them! That's why we had the whole house replaced with wood. They were the first replacement windows the house had had and it's about 60 years old.

violethill · 08/02/2009 19:25

Ours was a while back. I think it was less than 1000 per window though.

HeadFairy · 08/02/2009 21:34

Hi littlefish... I think the planning department of each council is slightly different, some enforce the ruling that there must be a gap between the panes of glass, however Wandsworth council aren't so strict. There's some more info about Pilkington K glass [http://www.pilkington.com/applications/products2006/english/bybenefit/thermalinsulation/kglass/defa ult.htm here]]

Littlefish · 08/02/2009 21:46

Thanks Headfairy. Will we need planning permission to change the windows? It's not a listed building or anything like that.

HeadFairy · 08/02/2009 21:50

You don't need planning permission to replace windows, unless you're in a conservation area, but you will need to conform to building regs because the legislation changed in about 2004. It was something to do with environmental regulations, so now if you replace windows they have to conform to building regs... I think. It's been a while since I checked these things.

fishie · 08/02/2009 21:51

we had lots of windows replaced with sash double glazed pilkingtnk, can't remember how much it cost but i think roughly £3k for two front bays and two backs. so 9 windows.

later we had wooden casement windows built to replace critalls and it was about £200 each, but not so posh - gap between dg glass much smaller.

slushymummy · 08/02/2009 22:18

We have had new, hand made doors and windows made from hardwood (sapele - similar to mahogany) in unusual dimensions, for a house in france. Its a small company (3 people) and he is bang on for cost and quality. We have just had another 4 stable doors (3 opening sections per door at our request) and 3 small windows, all the glass is double glazed, pilkington k and toughened. We have them at home for the moment so you could view the workmanship if you wanted to. He operates in Tameside, Manchester (and obviously we are that side of Manchester too!). He also does staircases and one-off furniture pieces for hotels and the like. He is very quick and gives you regular updates and will not do anything without checking first.
DO NOT GET UPVC !!!!!!! If the wood is hardwood and sikens'ed (type of varnish but not really shiny), it will outlast my DH, 42 yrs(I'm quoting him by the way !!!)

magicfarawaytree · 09/02/2009 00:02

slushy mummy what is the company called? am Tameside side of Manchester too. Would def be interested in seeing his work.

Hi Magic, I'm off to bed now, but if you want to give me a ring tomorrow, I'd be more than happy to show you his work. I suggest you see it first and we can have a chat to discuss tactics if you're interested (we managed to get a reduction in his quote).
Louise 07882 085835 or give us your number and we'll get him to ring you, he's called Mark. He has a fully equipped workshop unit on an industrial estate, so isn't working from a shed or anything !!!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 09/02/2009 12:07

Headfairy can you tell me which company you used? We're in London

HeadFairy · 09/02/2009 16:54

It was a company called Windows in Wood, but googling it I can't find them, maybe they've gone bust. It was about 4.5 years ago that I had them done I think. The guy who ran the company was pretty old, maybe he retired. Sorry about that.

verylapsedrunner · 09/02/2009 18:22

Rather delayed reply here but we used www.sashwindow.com they were excellent and use a new hard wood replacement/alternative called accoya www.titanwood.com/
