HOW TO FIND THE MAINS STOP TAP?

hifi · 03/02/2009 13:30

we have had 2 plumbers around to fix a dripping tap, neither could find the main water cut off.
the tap is now gushing and i have called the last plumber we had in to do work and even he canrt remember where it is.

i have tried every tap i can see and nothing has shut it off.

there is one apparently outside under a grate but needs a special key, both plumbers were reluctant to try.

any ideas what to do next? the amount of water being wasted is a disgrace.

shit! how annoying

you must be able to follow the pipe back?!?!? How could the plumbers NOT find it!?!?!? they have TOOLS for that sort of thing don't they? like metal pipe detectors...

you will have to switch if off at the road and hope it doesn't feed your neighbour's water too (mine does this)

i dont think they could be arsed.ive followed the pipes back and they lead to th main waste pipe. will move car and see if i can reach it.thanks.

You might not have one. We didn't when we moved in to this house - had to be turned off at the road. A decent plumber will have the special key that it needs, but might need to ask the water board for permission or clarification on which pipe is yours (depending on the pipe set up).

We got a plumber to install one for about £60 (very quick easy job)

maybe your neighbours know?

hifi · 03/02/2009 13:49

How crap! Definitely nothing under the kitchen sink (usual place), have a look behind the lip at the bottom of the inside of cupboard? Do you have an outside tap? How crap. Why would the plumbers be reluctant to try? Its their JOB!
