need our boiler replaced. Guy (Corgi reg'd) came round today and quoted us £5-6K as said he'd have to thread new pipes to the gas meter (couldn't tell us why they had to be new) and as meter long way from boiler that would add £3k to installation.

is this right or is he pulling a fast one?

any insider knoweldge gratefully recieved.

No insider knowledge I'm afraid, but when we got a new boiler, I got loads of quotes and asked loads of questions.....if the same thing kept coming up from different people, I tended to believe them.

If I needed new pipes to my meter, I would expect a corgi registered person to be able to tell me why.

You can also check their corgi registration.

Trust your gut instincts...we had some right cowboys around and ended up with someone very good who inspired confidence.

erm no that's ridiculous, get more quotes. I asked a similar question about British Gas last week and someone said they were the most expensive at 4k and when they had local plumber fit it was only £1400.

Katisha · 30/01/2009 19:58

We had a new boiler two weeks ago. Some pipes had to be moved. Whole lot including installation came to £2100.

QueenFee · 30/01/2009 19:58

Likewise we were quoted £3500 by BG and only £1800 by local and very experienced plumber.

Katisha · 30/01/2009 20:01

BTW ours was a corgi chap but not British Gas.

golds · 30/01/2009 20:03

My dad has just had a quote for a complete new system - installation, boiler, new pipes and all rads £1800 - you are being ripped off at that price. New boilers depending on the spec are around £700, pipe work tops £100 the rest is profit.

LyraSilvertongue · 30/01/2009 20:05

We had ours replaced a couple of months ago by a Corgi-reg guy. He had to fit a new boiler (Worcester Bosch), move it from the kitchen to the bathroom upstairs, remove network of useless pipes and pumps and install new ones, fit thermostat controls to all radiators, flush system etc etc. It came to £2,850 and we're in SW London. £5-6k sounds way over the odds.

traceybath · 30/01/2009 20:07

Well my mum has just had a new boiler fitted and it was complicatd as listed building and tricksy stuff needed to be done to the outside of the building.

The boiler itself cost £1200 and the fitting which took 2 days was an additional £500.

Not sure about the additional pipes thing - i'd definitely get some more quotes though.

bodiddly · 30/01/2009 20:13

where are you sfd?

SparkyFartDust · 30/01/2009 20:14

ok...a picture is emerging. Thank you.

Right will go with more quotes!

We had a new boiler fitted (Worcester Bosch Greenstar)before Christmas for £2500. This included new pipes from the meter to the boiler which is halfway round the house, moving the boiler about 6 inches, a new exhaust pipe and a new pump for the heating.

BG quoted £3600 and another quote was £1800 but he did not mention various safety aspects and so was rejected.

worley · 30/01/2009 20:17

this is quite interesting, i need want our boiler moved from our bedroom in to the loft and thought it would be about £1000!! how wrong was i. maybe i will have to out up with for a few more years then.

Ohforfoxsake · 30/01/2009 20:20

Same happened to me - one guy came round and started talking about pulling the floor up etc. BG quoted a crazy £4k (they bang on about 'discounts' and part-exchange and STILL come up with this figure!) In the end a plumber recommended by someone gave me 3 quotes ranging from £1,600 - £2,500. We went for the mid-range (still haggled him down a wee bit) and it was fine. He didn't lag the condenser pipes though which caused a problem as they froze a few weeks ago, which was really annoying.

If you have a BG Homecare agreement they will come and check the installation for you.

chocolatemummy · 30/01/2009 20:29

absolutely pulling a fast one, we had a new boiler fitted and new pipe work also and it cost us £1295
where are you........ in London?

SparkyFartDust · 30/01/2009 21:56

Chocolate yes- North London

LyraSilvertongue · 30/01/2009 22:14

Even in London, £5-6k is wayyyyyy too much. I'm in London too and mine was less than half that.

SparkyFartDust · 30/01/2009 22:27

thanks Lyra will go in search of new quote...

£1,800 last year for a new condensing boiler, high end of range (Midlands) We didn't get any other quotes as we have used the same heating engineer for years and he is honest and reliable.

No other work was needed.

bodiddly · 31/01/2009 18:54

SFD my mate's dp is corgi registered and based in west London - he is totally trustworthy - do you want me to ask whether he could either recommend someone or quote himself? He works for a company but may be able to help .. I have no idea really but wont mention it to him unless you are interested!
