I am always drawn to certain things in a house, ie:

  • Velux roof lights (love looking up at the blue sky)
  • Walk in wardrobes or pantries or just lots of good old fashioned cupboards
  • Original sanded and varnished floors
  • Quirky things like having to go up or down a couple of steps (when already upstairs) to get into bathroom etc.
  • High ceilings.

What features are essential in your perfect house?

Airing cupboard
Laundry/utility room
Extra living room (family room)

sagacious · 20/01/2009 19:16

non mouldy

MrsTittleMouse · 20/01/2009 19:17

Lots of light.
A downstairs loo for potty training.

Portofino · 20/01/2009 19:17

Farmhouse kitchen with breakfast nook and walk in pantry. And computer area.

Big fire places

Walk in wardrobes

Games room in the cellar

This might sound a bit sad, but I have some funky software to design dream houses/gardens that you can then virtually walk round. I find it great fun.

Pannacotta · 20/01/2009 20:30

A new cocktail perhaps?

lalalonglegs · 20/01/2009 21:03

Double fronted
Huge slideaway/foldaway windows
Polished concrete floor
Utility room big enough to hang drying laundry in
Smallish kitchen area in HUGE family room
Really wide garden
Massive hall cupboard (coats, wellies, scooters)
Side passage for bikes/pushchairs
Tonnes of insulation so hardly need heating
Whole wall of cupboards to store absolutely everything
Apple tree
Study with miles of shelving
Beautiful contemporary staircase
Sedum roof
No traffic noise (or any other type)
No Aussie backpacking neighbours
Windows in (slightly) unexpected areas

Portofino · 20/01/2009 22:33

lalalonglegs, my house could tick many of your boxes I think!

It's rented rather than mine, but Belgian new build with rain water flushing toilets. We have 2 huge hall cupboards and a garage which holds everything else.

One huge family room with kitchen/dining/living with 2 lots of doors onto the garden (unfortunately overlooking the lots of other houses/shops/restaurants and not that large)

Upstairs laundry - hey this is just where you need it, why did noone think of this before?

Loads of insulation. Even when it was -13 the other week, it was not necessary to leave the heating on.

We have a huge study on the top floor, but unfortunately no money to buy the miles of shelving. One day....Room is empty at the mo. And we are on a 9 year lease.

When we came to see it they put the rent up. We are now skint, but there was nothing to compare.

siriusmewsaysochayethenoo · 20/01/2009 22:44

I'd like a sweeping staircase. Like in all the American T.V shows. Got a real thing for stairs!!!

lalalonglegs · 21/01/2009 07:43

Oooooh, . I see quite a few houses with bits I want to nick (I write on architecture and design) but never everything in one house and never in south London.

FeelingLucky · 21/01/2009 10:53

Double fronted house with off street parking and garage
Large porch and hallway with tiled floor
Kitchen family room with french windows to a large mature garden with patio
double aspect living space
high ceilings and large sash windows
bay window and fireplace in sitting room
parquet flooring
pantry
utility room
cellar - not damp so can store things down there
ensuite master bedroom
attic hobby room / workshop with plenty of storage in eaves and velux windows
study with balcony

ooh, and central north London location close to good primary and then if the house can be lifted up and placed right next to a good secondary before finally being transplanted next to Hampstead Heath that would be grand

BonsoirAnna · 21/01/2009 10:56

Ooh, I have two huge walk in wardrobes and lots of original built-in cupboards, and original sanded and varnished parquet floors and high ceilings. I love them all .

And we have huge windows in all the rooms, and shutters (I love shutters).

ninedragons · 21/01/2009 11:01

Some sort of stunningly beautiful view.
High ceilings.
Fireplaces in every room, including the bathrooms.
Balcony or verandah access from every bedroom.
A mud room or big hall closets.

Stayingsunnygirl · 21/01/2009 11:03

Pretty much all of the above, with the addition of a cellar with more than one room - so we could have a den down there for the boys, a utility room with a big chest freezer as well as the laundry machines, and a workshop with direct access to the garden, so that dh and the boys can bring their bikes in and work on them without them having to do it in my utility room!

Stayingsunnygirl · 21/01/2009 11:04

Ooops - I've just noticed that FeelingLucky had already put a cellar on her list - note to self, read thread properly before answering!
