Thinking about an extention or a conservatory to give me a bit more living space as I currently have a living/ dining/ study all in one. Thinking I could put on a conservatory to house the dining table, but like the idea of a longer ne along the back of the kitchen too, to give a bit of a porch.

Hoping some of you will share how much you conservatories cost, and how big and were they heated etc.

£13K for a smallish one with central heating
we had a quote done on our last house
needless to say it we didnt get it

MascaraOHara · 19/01/2009 15:59

I got a quote for a fairly long thin conservatory - was ~20k

doublehelp · 19/01/2009 16:08

ours cost us 7k all in with underfloor heating and doesn't get any colder than the rest of the house

skramble · 19/01/2009 16:12

Seem expensive, I might be as well going for a proper extension, the back of the house is south facing so we might cook in a conservatory anyway.

skramble - we are south facing and imo, having a conservatory was the worst thing we could have done because you fry in summer although in winter we do have a heater on and it is lovely.

Ours cost around £13,000 about 5 years ago and is a P shape and runs along the whole length of the house, tbh I think we could have for slightly more money got an extension like say a summer room.

we had a conervatory done before christmas it is 4m by 3.5m edwardian. WE bought the conservatory second hand for £150 then bought a spare window for £25. We then paid a builder £3600 to do a base, build solid wall on right and dwarf wall/pillars on the left. He also put up the conservatory and plastered/rendered all points. DH did the electric himself and we use a oil filled radiator to heat it which has been fine as we leave patio door open so takes heat from the house aswell as dc use it at a playroom.

We had the exact same thing quoted but with brand new conservatory at £13k

skramble · 19/01/2009 16:31

The P shaped thing was what I had in mind really.

Never seen a conservatory for sale second hand, never even thought of that. If I could get a builder to do the founds than I think I could manage to get FIL to help with putting up the main bit of it and the internal stuff.

But if we did an extention we could get the main work done by builders and all the twiddly bits ourself.

It did also cost us another £3,000 to get the patio done afterwards.

Don't forget you are going to need furniture to go into it and probably blinds.

morningpaper · 19/01/2009 16:35

some of these seem cheap

ours in just straight but cost £30k

Is about 25ft by 10ft

It all depends on if you want plastic or wood. Plus as bellavita points out - think about where it's facing as you may want to invest in some specialist glass to lessen the roasting - which does work as we've got it at home.

You're looking upwards of £13,000 for a plastic I reckon. DP specialises in wood and he usually starts at around £19,000+ for a small one.

Underfloor heating is the most expensive way of heating as far as installation goes but with good insulation then it can work out better in the long run.

Get loads of quotes from companies and don't go for a hard sell!

Nemo -- that is such a cool way to do it - where did you find the conservatory from

Nemoandthefishes · 19/01/2009 17:10

jean a neighbour of my mum[who lives about 40 miles away] was taking it down to replace with double storey extension so he asked if he would sell it to her. He was just going to take it to the tip..lol

izyboy · 19/01/2009 17:59

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 19/01/2009 18:01

jeanjeannie · 19/01/2009 19:54

Nemo - am that he was going to take it to the tip!!

Izy - really? Ebay? Blimey - don't know why my DP bothers getting them designed and made up....reckon we should just get looking on ebay *runs off to have a peek

Get a builder to build it, I did that in previous house and even asked them to build it as a shell so I finished it myself and saved money on decoration. Double glazing company was going to fleece me. I had a full wall built on one side. My builder got a carpenter to do it bespoke so the frame was wooden rather than plastic, it was single glazed but being southfacing it was warm enough from Feb till November.
