what colour should I paint the walls?

DD1 due in April so DS2 is going to have to move in with DS1.

He has recently had new carpet and curtains which are sage green, really plush and nice and I don't want to change them.

But I also want to make it girly....

Have got my eye on a white wash wardrobe and cot and we have bought a pink wall light, which has a green stalk which you kind of drap along the wall. Have bought a soft pink rug with green swirls in it. To try and combine the pink and green IYSWIM.

So, my question is what colour to do the walls. Was going to do a really soft pink on the bottom, then a border with bits of green in somehow, and then a cream/magnolia at the top half of the wall.

But now I like the whitewash furniture I'm thinking it wouldn't go with cream walls (even if the bottom half if pink). Should I go for a white top half, any ideas please?

Oh at the moment the walls are bright lime green - had to keep in with DS2's jungle theme - dreading trying to paint over them!

lilac

Your ideas sound good. I would go for a winter white on all the walls and probably wouldn't have a border

I think green lilac & white would be lovely - with touches of pink

I'm not too keen on colours split on walls

I prefer whole walls of colour

surprisenumber3 · 17/01/2009 18:54

thanks all, some interesting ideas. and thank you for the links herbietea.

If I did whole wall colours - what should I go for?

It is a pretty small room really.

How about lilac on the longer walls and white on the shorter ones?

A pale lilac with the green and the white furniture would be ideal. YOu should definitely do whole walls rather than splitting IMO/E you really should consider painting the celing the same colour as the walls.

I know it sounds as mad as a box of frogs but it gives a really subtle effect.

NorktasticNinja · 17/01/2009 19:50

This or maybe this sort of colour density (or a tad lighter) would be great. Lilac is one of those colours that always looks darker 'up' IYSWIM.

I did DDs nursery lilac with white furniture and curtains (the floor is walnut). We spent a aaages choosing the right colour and the result is totally lush.

Seriously, all the walls AND the ceiling the same colour. It works like a dream, particularly in a nursery.

surprisenumber3 · 17/01/2009 19:54

thank you - I think very pale lilac is growing on me! She better not be a boy now, lol.

Lilac is fine for a baby boy, it really is! It's only wall colour anyway so you can easily update it to something a bit butcher when he's older.

I'm expecting DC2 (don't know the sex yet) the nursery is staying the same colour (although it will need freshening up).

surprisenumber3 · 17/01/2009 20:06

I painted it lemon for the first one (10 years ago) and then kept it the same for DS2, I would keep the same again if I could but the lime really is a bit garish!

You will need several coats of white if it's a strong colour

AnotherFineMess · 17/01/2009 20:11

I'd definitely go for a nice subtle yellow as that looks lovely with green and pink.

NorktasticNinja · 17/01/2009 20:34

IMHO yellow and green could quite easily turn out looking vile rather dated, sorry.

NorktasticNinja · 17/01/2009 20:35

vile

AnotherFineMess · 17/01/2009 22:19

LOL at the link. You might be right.

As you may have guessed, DD has yellow and green...well, 3 yellow walls, a teal carpet, and then one wall with a princesses and castles and dragons and knights mural.

I love it, but then I'm no Colin and/or Justin.

SpongeBrainedHalfWit · 17/01/2009 22:20

No border. Very early 90's

NorktasticNinja · 17/01/2009 22:36

Oh, yellow and green can work, it's just a difficult combo to get right.

Your DDs rooms sounds great, I bet she loves it

VintageCarrotTop · 17/01/2009 23:13

not sure if anyone has had this idea - paint a wavy line all around the room about a quarter of the way up the wall from the bottom in green - paint bottom half in green - top half in sky blue - paint on a couple of flowers, drape the light cable in the green half with the flower up the wall so it looks like its growing. You wil lhave an instant fields effect! Dependin how arty you are you could trace the outline of the flower light and create a few flowers scattered along the grass around the room x

noddyholder · 17/01/2009 23:18

No borders or wavy lines although the 80s is back but only for music and fashion I think.Green pink and white is lovely if you get it right Have a look at Designers Guild they use that combination a lot.I would paint the walls white or have you considered wallpaper>

surprisenumber3 · 17/01/2009 23:36

I love that idea VCT!
