Worktop covering needed for painted surface!

I am not sure if there is anything I can do to the wooden worktop we have in our back kitchen - we have granite in our main kitchen but the one in the other sort of kitchen, very old house handmade units that are nice but one lot - in the kitchen that isn't seen as is behind huge chimney has a wooden worktop - not nice wooden just painted flat wood.

At the moment it is painted white but everytime anything is put on it it marks terribly - is there a hard wearing paint that would deal with the bashes and crashes or do I need top go all out and cover it with a piece of work top - there is one on B&Q that is laminate and matches the granite we have elsewhere but I would rather just a quick fix for the moment until I can convince DH that is it his idea to get the granite or laminate and have it porfessionally fitted.

SOrry for waffling girls am in the middle of a spring clean and having speant 30 minutes trying to make the wood look better with a bloody good clean and sand I am at my wits end!

I'm sure I've seen covers for worktops which just slot over the exsisting ones. I'll go and have a look!

Ok re-read original post and have found a stop gap cover here HTH!

Thanks - will pop down to focus and have a look at the different finishes - although at £5.00 a roll I may be able to talk DH into getting the granite look worktop!
