I live in a quiet residential area. The only commercial property around is opposite my house. They have swapped a relatively small dully lit sign for a bigger brighter one. It is glaring at me when I look out of the window at the front now!

No-one contacted us re planning permission. Would they have needed it? The dimensions now are that the sign itself is probably about 8ft off the ground at the top but is probably about 10ft long by 2 to 3 ft high.

It is too bright and that is my main problem. Maybe I could just nicely ask them if they could change the bulbs lol!

Probably, the commercial business near us needed to. Call the planning dept and ask.

Yes all illuminated signage needs permission from the council, ring the council and find out if it was granted before being errected.

Defiantely contact council - I think there is something about 'nuisance light'.

If you have a problem with council taking action, get on to your local councillor/MP, I did this and was successful in getting the business concerned having to dismantle the sign. It was so bright you could see it nearly a mile away!

agree contact council, my nearest garage was turned down for planning for illuminated signs.

If the sign is internally illuminated for its full area then would need advertisement consent. If only the lettering is lit (think called "halo" lit) or externally illuminated it may not need planning permission depending on the area in sq m of the sign.

If you google advertisement consent then you might be able to get the regs on the internet. Could be on the site www.communities.gov.uk or HMSO.

Thanks everyone.
It is fully illuminated. But there was a smaller illuminated sign there before so maybe they can get away with it as it's just a replacement.

I've kind of got used to it now - it isn't that bad.
