Our house has had then removed by previous philistines who lived here. I'm toying with putting them back. But they'll make the room seem smaller won't they?

Not sure if they will make the room seem smaller but I personally love them. What period is the house?

Tinker · 06/01/2009 19:35

House is 1920s, so shoudl have them. Not high high ceilings though. Thanks for answering my idling thoughts

yes without high ceilings will make room smaller. are you sure the room had them before?

If ceilings are over 2.5m yes (make sure you can get proper period match, Arts & Crafty? Maybe a plate shelf?); if under 2.5m leave well alone.

Thanks. Will measure. It definitely had them before, you can see where plaster has been pathced up when wallpaper removed

Ceilings must 8' to 9' - what's that in new money? Too lazy to work it out

Yes, definitely, if the house had them originally. See if one of your neighbours will let you in to take a look at what the originals would have been like.

I love my picture rails.

If you paint above the rail and the ceiling the same colour that is lighter than your walls it will make the room seem taller. Or you can use the space between the rail and the ceiling to introduce a different colour but this only works in a tall room.

They also make hanging and moving pictures so much easier.
