Was your sofa good value?

I am buying my first sofa and am so confused. Everyone I know is a bit further up th sofa ladder and seems to have bought one about every 3 years from Ikea for 2 or 3 sofas then spent what seems like a fortune (er, £1500+ for a 3 seater) on one.

I fear the false economy! Also would like something UK made and non composite
board.

Yup, it's a false economy. We bought what seemed hideously expensive one (B&B Italia) eight years ago. It's still going strong, we may have it recovered as we have had three children since then but it is a fantastic contemporary design and I can't imagine wanting to replace it completely. Hint: it does have removable covers - they don't look removable but are - which is a God send for when stuff is spilled on it. That would be my one priority if I did have to get a new one.

if you can't do leather you must have washable covers. in which case a spare set would be a Very Good Thing. we have a huge rip in the cover and can't buy a new set - if the springs hadn't also gone a spare cover would prolong its overall life (and also make it look decent more often cos you'd wash more often).

mumwhereareyou - I'm glad to hear your Ektorp from Ikea is doing well. That's what we ended up with. We got this one in red with extra white covers (I plan to do white covers for summer, red for winter - that's what it has atm). It's fabulously comfortable and easily fits 4 adults. Also, there is storage room underneath - we have 6 large lidded plastic boxes under ours where the kids toys and books go at the end of the day. Our main reason for buying this sofa, however, was that it made maximum use of the space we have more than any sofa combination we saw.

We spent ages agonising over sofas. Our previous sofa was a cushion-back, which I grew to loathe, as it looked messy the second anyone sat on it, and my ds loved to play with the cushions, making it unusable.

Never, ever get a cushion-back if you have kids would be my advice.

We've just binned a Sofa Workshop one after just 7 years....it basically fell to bits. DP stripped it down and we couldn't believe how badly it was made - bits of splintered chipboard glued and nailed together - shocking.

We've just got an ex-display model from a local furniture maker and it rocks! Just need to save up for another one - and some spare covers as the kids have already christened it!
