Chisel out a bit on the door for the hinges? Do you need new hinges or can you use the hinges that are already there, i.e unscrew old door and then just attach new one onto same hinges?

I'm hoping to start replacing internal doors one by one this year but not sure how to go about it. That is if I'm able to find any that will fit our old fashioned sized door frames of course.

thanks for advice

You need to chisel out an area for the hinges, so that they can lie flush with the door.

It's not hard to do the chiselling, but hanging doors is one of the hardest DIY tasks.

i'm getting a joiner in for this, it's quite a job apparently.

A wise move, OHBollox.

I remember when we were doing up on first house (on a budget), DH replacing doors. It was painful. It's not a case of just fitting the new hinges and then hanging the door. You have to plane off the top and bottom, etc. Small discrepancies in the hanging can mean a door that never shuts (we lived with that until we sold the house).

I read somewhere years ago, that in the toss up between DIY and getting someone in, hanging doors was one of the most cost-effective job to get someone else to do.
