Cold water tank connection leaking

On the evening of 30th we discovered that the ballcock arrangement on our water tank in loft had bitten the dust. So yesterday DP went and got new bits and has attatched them but is left with a leaking joint where the there is an 'olive' on the incoming mains pipe that you screw onto the water tank connection. He has tried TPFE tape and Plumbers Friend gum stuff but despite trying over and over still has a leak that varies on each try fron drip to fine spray to bigger spray. Only other thing would appear to be to remove part of the pipe, put on new olive and solder new pipe on. This is beyond our capabilities and plumber would be difficult to find/extortionate at this time of year. Any other solutions to try? Can we go away and leave water turned off at mains with heating still on? we are meant to be visiting relatives for New Year.

If I were you I would drain the whole system and turn off the heating

You don't want what we came back to one new year where the mains connection to the tank went completely and we had inches of water over the whole house and no bathroom ceiling.

(Thankfully DH is v handy and put new pipe on on new years day, if you were closer to us I would send him round )

But if we turn water off at stopcock and go away shouldn't be able to pour out anywhere? Am more concerned about system working without mains water coming in. Does it need a supply? Don't want to leave heating off when temp is meant to drop below zero. So did your DH have to solder and stuff?

I wouldn't leave heating on without mains, it does need water coming into the system sometimes I think. But I am not an expert

He had to put a new length of pipe in and olive and then blow torch it I think - will ask when he gets back from shop

He says he put in pressure fittings that don't need heat, get a new olive or whole new fitting. And DONT leave heating on with no mains

Oh thanks for getting back to me we have managed to get ahold of a plumber who came to us years ago and he will have a look this afternoon.
