Am finally getting rid of teh laminate thats in the lounge (loved it now hate it) and replacing the carpet on stairs and landing so

lounge is 4.1m x 4.2 m so is that approx 16m2?

Landing is roughly 1.6m x 1.8m so is that 2.9m2 (roughly)

I have now idea how to work out the open plan stairs so have measured them and counted them

So excluding the stairs if carpet is £10 per square metre does that mean it'll cost around £300 for the lounge/landing (I'll have to ask carpet shop about stairs!!)

I must admit, I kinda cheat a bit, I ask the carpet fitter to measure and write down what to order, sometimes this can save a little money too as the fitter knows how he (or she ) wants to piece in the stairs. Good luck.

thanks have phoned local independent carpet man and told him my measurements but he is coming next tuesday to measure up properly for me! (ideally if he can price it right would love to use him rather than carpetright/allied etc but not sure he is that cheap??)

You don't really buy carpet by the m2 in reality, you buy it by the length (generally 5m or more wide then measure how long the piece you need will be). So, for your living room, you would need a 4.1m length that is standard 5m wide which is 20.5 m2, iyswim. Landing will also be shortest length x standard width although the leftover may be useful for doing some of stairs. It really is a lot less hassle to go and choose carpet you like, pay deposit and get their fitter/salesperson to come and measure up - you always need far more than you think plus underlay.
