Any roof experts out there?

We moved house in July and had the roof replaced shortly afterwards.
When dh went up into the loft to check it he said there is now a smallish gap all the way around where you can see the street outside.
Anyway, according to the roofer it's a fairly new building regulation and it has to be done for ventilation purposes.
I'm not sure I believe this so wanted to know if anyone knows if firstly this is the case and also whether it would cause any problems if dh uses loft insulation to cover the gaps,as we have about 6 rolls in the loft, that were left by the vendors.
Thanks.

Yes, there are building regs for ventilation. From what I understand, there should be a slot or "gap" running one side of the roof and grilles higher up on the opposite side to allow a draught. It's really important that you keep air moving through so you shouldn't block them up with insulation but put the insulation down so that the gaps and grilles aren't covered.

He's right that it's for ventialtion and the building regs on this did change recently. I'm not sure that you should be able to see the gap all the way around though.

If you are in any doubt you should call a local architect or building surveyor for advice.

Thanks very much.
Have just double checked with dh and he now tells me that the gap is only at the front of the house and not all the way around as he originally told me,so by the sounds of it,it's probably ok.
Will make sure he doesn't cover it with insulation and that he just rolls it out on the floor instead.
