Living room redocoration - what do we think of dark chocolate and teal???

I will soon be the proud new owner of a new 4 piece suite in dark chocolate leather, along with a solid rectangular oak table (with 2 additional leaves) and 10 high back dark chocolate chairs. Need to redo the rest of the room. We will be adding a wooden floor - thinking wide planks, not sure what wood/shade. Also putting in a "hole in the wall" fireplace (picture frame raised from the floor style). Either side of the chimney breast I want a feature wall paper, that also accents accessories in the room.

What colour would you go for?

Any ideas?

Like teal/turquoise with chocolate - sounds like a big room which would handle a strong colour.

southeastastra · 01/12/2008 20:27

mm sounds yummy

ComeOVeneer · 01/12/2008 20:30

Thanks for the thumbs up so far. Is their any other colour that works in this situation?

Think dark chocolate goes with a lot. Ooh - hang on - I've got Kevin McCloud's Choosing Colours book - I'll have a look.

ComeOVeneer · 01/12/2008 20:34

Thanks Habbibu, I have one chance to get this right (dh won't let me redo it again )

I think it's a bit old-fashioned. It was in a lot of show homes about 5 years ago.

NoNickname · 01/12/2008 20:40

Green was last summer's colour, and may well be in again next spring/summer. It is fresh, and at the moment (for winter) seems to be being accented with purple.

Have a look at this cushion for an idea.

ComeOVeneer · 01/12/2008 20:40

lalalonglegs, what would you put with dark choc brown??????

OP posts:
Mung · 01/12/2008 20:43

That cushion does make it look like purple can go with brown and green...its making me think.

whoingodsnameami · 01/12/2008 20:44

I have a chocolate and teal front room, this is on my feature wall.

whoingodsnameami · 01/12/2008 20:47

I wanted either teal or aubagine (sp)

Habbibu · 01/12/2008 20:47

Um - this is difficult to do through the medium of writing. He has a nice palette where he puts a chocolate brown with the following:

  1. A sort of delicate blue - designers guild - ocean
  2. duck egg blue - fired earth townhouse blue
  3. agreeny-cream "old white" colour - little greene 54N02
  4. sage green - cole & son - ruban
  5. a kind of cross between the duck egg and the sage - paint library - mineral.

You should be able to look up these colours on www.choosing-paint.com/

More subtle variations on teal might get away from the "outdated" look, while keeping the fact that these colours do work well. Duck egg or sage would be lovely, I think. Part of me would also consider something warm like a farrow and ball deep red, or orangey-red.

lalalonglegs · 01/12/2008 21:12

I am going through a real lime green moment (honestly) but I can see that I could be in a bit of a minority on that one. Or something with lots of grey in as Habbibu suggests - sagey or duck eggy. Very pared down.

jeanjeannie · 01/12/2008 21:33

Chocolate brown is great as lots of things go with it. You could go mad and have shocking pink!

A light silver/grey paper would look very stylish and striking. Would also mean you didn't have a strong colour statement on the wall so you were free to have colour accents elsewhere such as curtains/cushions/rugs/throws etc

hot · 01/12/2008 21:40

Agree with lala v dated. What about chocolate olive and a stone colour and lose the feature walls

ComeOVeneer · 03/12/2008 19:03

Still undecided. Have found some lovely teal/brown cushions in next, but also some rather nice purpley/aubergine ones too.

FeelingLucky · 03/12/2008 19:12

Turquoise, aubergine, duck egg blue would make room look like boutique hotel imho

I'd go for grey and/or green (though not lime green).
Feature wall might date, but then you can easily paint over it when it does go out of fashion.

ComeOVeneer · 03/12/2008 19:15

Feature wall(s) is either side of chimney breast which will have a "hole in the wall" fire place. Currently it is papered (by previous occupants) and I think it will be easier to paper rather than stipe and make good for painting. House is a very modern open plan 4 storey town house, with big rooms, sunken halogen spots, modern fixtures and fittings etc.

I'd echo FeelingLucky...I think too strong a coloured paper on the wall/s would give a boutique hotel feel. Nice for a visit - but not sure it'd be great to live with 24/7.

The cushions are fab but will get lost if the walls are of a similar colour/tone. Are you after a light feel to the room or warm and cosy? With choccy brown furniture you can take it either way.

With the cushions you've seen you could pick a mink/heather shade for the walls for a warm feel. A silver/grey (perhaps in a subtle flock pattern) choice would give you a lighter, more modern look. So many choices! Just really depends on the overall statement you want to make; light, warm, cool or funky?

Sidge · 03/12/2008 22:42

Our dining room has an oak table, chocolate brown leather chairs and chocolate brown curtains. We've got 2 opposing feature walls painted in an icy blue colour, and I think it looks fab

I think cornflower or ice blue looks really good with dark brown.

AnotherFineMess · 03/12/2008 22:54

We have a metallic gold feature wall and cream accesories with our dark chocolate brown sofa. Haven't a clue whether it's dated but I like it, it's warm and Christmassy but fine in the summer too, sparkles in the sunlight...

Littlefish · 03/12/2008 23:00

We have used a strong raspberry colour with our stone/choc brown/wooden/oat table sitting room.

It looks gorgeous.

Tinkjon · 06/12/2008 17:58

That is exactly what I want my living room to look like when we decorate in about the year 2037. It's a brilliant colour combination! I probably prefer it with duck-egg blue but we're having that in the kitchen...
