Could I have some recommendations for fitted storage please

We are adopting a little girl who will be moving in with us in February. Our study will become her bedroom so we need to clear it out. I think we need to put some storage into our sitting/dining room, at the very least we need a good computer cabinet but preferably we need a large built-in unit that can take all the computer stuff and our mountains of paperwork and possibly hold the TV too. I would like it to look a bit more 'fitted' and stylish than buying expandable IKEA style storage. Does anyone know of reliable companies who can do this sort of thing at a reasonable price?

TIA

Bump for Bran

I know that in the back of some sunday paper magazines they advertise bespoke furniture makers and storage stuff.

Chucked 'em all out into recycling this morning sorry.

bran · 28/11/2008 20:46

I'll have a look at the Sunday Times when we get it, thanks WowOoo.

Bumping for the evening crowd, surely some of you must have some serious storage in your sitting rooms. I would prefer up-market off the peg, but would consider bespoke if it's not outrageously expensive and it could be done in time.

i think from memory there is something called jali - let me google....

cece · 28/11/2008 20:48

here

why don;t you 'design' it yourselves basically, think about exactly what you want/what you need and where, and get a joiner/carpenter to build and fit it for you. They'd probably use MDF which can be painted.
Ask around for joiner/carpenter recommendations.

bran · 28/11/2008 22:06

I'm not sure that I know what I want exactly, I was rather hoping to just describe my needs to someone and have something built. I'm not even sure where to put it in the sitting room. I think I'm going to have to buy some interior design magazines to get some ideas.

Jali is cool cece, I'll have a play with it over the weekend and check out some designs.

where abouts are you in the country, i am in london, south east, happy to recommend our carpenter.

bran · 28/11/2008 22:30

I'm in East London wp, not far from the Blackwall tunnel. If gave him a rough idea and/or some magazine pictures of what I want would your carpenter be able to extrapolate a full design from that?

wombleprincess · 01/12/2008 14:48

yup, thats pretty much what we did, i will dig out his number for you.

bran · 02/12/2008 09:26

Fab, thanks. I'm paid up for CAT, if you don't want to post the number on here I can CAT you and you can email it back. (I'm surprised that you live in SE London BTW, surely Womble royalty should be in a prime location on Wimbledon Common. )

mfi ???

congrats Bran... delighted to hear that you are adopting a little girl. Good luck

bran · 05/12/2008 10:58

Thanks kiwibella, we're looking forward to meeting her. She's very cute in the photos.

Did I read on another thread that you're moving/have moved house away from glamorous East London?

OP posts:
kiwibella · 05/12/2008 11:19

not yet Bran... we want to move to a house which will mean moving away. We have completed the paper work to buy a property in Cambridgeshire... so we are (impatiently) waiting for news!!

kiwibella · 05/12/2008 11:21

I used to have the number of a local carpenter (I sort of knew his wife from dd's club). We didn't get the work done but a friend did use him... if it is helpful, I could see if I can find his number?

bran · 05/12/2008 11:30

That would be great thanks kb. I'm asking around all my friends. Quite a few of them have had carpentry work done but wouldn't recommend the carpenter and the few who were really good are either busy or have moved away/abroad.

I'm dithering about what sort of storage I should get, it's difficult because the room doesn't have any obvious locations to put storage into. It's just a huge rectangle with windows everywhere.

I have just dropped an email to my friend. Hope to hear soon.

kiwibella · 05/12/2008 16:51

Hi,

I know a Carpenter Joiner that can help you design, build and fit what you need at a reasonable price. He did shelving for me, there are pics on his website. I think he covers London, not sure where you are though?
