Anyone converted their gas fire back to wood/coal stove?

Thinking it may be cheaper in the long run, esp considering fuel prices. Is it really expensive though? And a major messy job?

Have a look here

Thanks KatyMac I obviously didn't scroll down far enough when I scanned previous posts but love the look of some of those stoves, the squirrel looks good for us. Has anyone converted from gas to solid fuel...just wondering about costs before we start getting quotes.

It's very complicated as you may need your flue lining or brickwork made good or your hole made bigger & do you want hot water/central heating - kind of a 'piece of string' question

The fireplace used to house a woodburning stove, previous owner changed it over to gas. Wouldnt be going for whole central heating issue, just a boost for the lounge/dining room. sowe know the chinmey/flue can cope. Will get some chaps in for quotes...hope its not unbearably pricey now thta I fancy the idea! Would prob have to have the hearth made bigger too, gather there are rules about how big they must be. Thanks for your help!

Speak to your building control dept (at the council) & they will have the info

The rules changed about flues recently so do check

I imagine taking out the gas will cost quite a bit

I have a wood burning rayburn which has been converted from coal. I LOVE it. I don't know about the cost of coversion though as it was already done when I got it.
