I've done it and this sounds like the perfect first tiling job for you to try.
It tells you on the tile adhesive how long to wiat - iirc it is 24 hours? Make sure you but the heavy duty waterproof stuff, not just the shitty water resistant!

When I did our kitchen I just followed a book. I also managed the bathroom once I became confident.

You can do it!

Bloody hell girl ! You plastered a wall ?! In that case tiling should be a breeze !

Weegle · 11/11/2008 14:23

I've done it too and agree this sounds like a perfect first job. It's the cutting that is the pain TBH so if you reckon you haven't got any of that to do or only straight ninety degree cuts then do it yourself. It's only foolish if your tiles are v expensive and you have to make loads of awkward cuts and measurements - then it might be more economical to pay someone

i think this sounds fine. i did it a long time ago as part of a girl guide project (!) and it was much easier than i expected.

when we had builders in earlier this year and was getting supplies, they told me not to buy the stuff that is both adhesive and grout as they reckon it isn't sticky enough. so buy separate adhesive and grout even though the all in one may seem easier.

I retiled our kitchen - its easy and all instructions on tiles and grout anyway. If you're not sure there's loads of advice on the web. go on have a go.

I disagree on the separate grout/adhesive - I often use the stuff that is both and it works fine!

The thing to be careful of if you use a separate adhesive is that it may be grey rather than white so you need to be careful not to use too much so that it shows in the cracks.

Once you get into tiling it is easy and it is definitely the cutting that is the hard bit.

A small area should be easy, the main thing to remember is to put those little plastic pegs that keep the tiles the right distance apart.

Buy some spacers and you'll be fine.

its easier than you think
take time, use spacers etc
i tiled a complete bathroom when heavily pregnant but, er, cant grout for toffee!

start at the bottom corner iirc and work outwards i checked a diy book before starting for a few tips etc
the worst bit is cutting if you dont have a machine or are crap at measuring (me)

Smittals · 11/11/2008 15:48

Good luck, sounds like you will be fine. Just wanted to say that, if you haven't got them already, get narrow spacers. I tiled our old bathroom and was mistakenly sold floor tile spacers. Didn't know any better and ended up with wide grout lines that were a mould magnet later on! Just doing new bathroom now with 2mm spacers and it's just as easy even though they are so fine. I heart tiling!
