Today's most boring question? Help me choose a wall colour for my kitchen, please!

Have run out of ideas.
Live in old cottage with fairly large kitchen. Exposed brickwork on part of one wall and white cupboards (to be replaced but not for some time yet). The walls are white at the moment and it's driving me mad?what colour should I paint it?
I thank you

Do you want it to look properly "old cottage"? cos otherwise I would have said a pretty muted turquoise would have set the bricks and the white cupboards off nicely.

parachutes · 07/11/2008 12:26

ohhh I like that idea. Any particular supplier? (don't worry, I will stop short of actually asking you to come paint it ).

Not worried about looking "old cottage" to be honest as "old cottage" is making me want to flick matches at it at the moment!

you wantsomething that will set of the brickwork
agree muted colours probably be the prettiest:
blue ground
green blue
dix blue

The first image here is nice, although it's not paint, it's tiled.

Suppliers? Oh I have no idea sorry, you'll have to grab a load of tester pots and see what calls to you! That's the fun bit, probably.

parachutes · 07/11/2008 12:41

Thanks cremolafoam, I really like the blue ground.

I had something called Tuscan sunset (I think it was Dulux) in my kitchen, had two old open fireplaces - it was a warm pinkish/terracotta colour, depending on the light.

I loved it and will have the kitchen redone in it when we move home again...my decorator however called it 'old ladies underwear'!

Thanks JATGB?we must have xposted. I love that image. I spent a fortune on samples for the sitting room and dh always tuts when he sees them in the cupboard
Scaryteacher-I won't ask what your builder gets up to!

duck egg blue or chocolate brown

parachutes · 07/11/2008 14:05

love chocolate brown generally, just worried it would be too much in a large room? shall have a look.

Pale blue or pale green will go with white cupbaords and try getting wood handles for the cupboards for a slightly reustic effect - that's what we're about to do don't mind if you copy

clutteredup · 07/11/2008 14:06

Sorry terrible spelling!

MadreInglese · 07/11/2008 14:16

depends how much actual wall there is, usually not so much in a kitchen if you have brickwork and cupboards

you can always change your mind and paint over it if you really hate the colour you choose

parachutes · 07/11/2008 14:26

True MadreInglese, I'm going to include that colour in some of the samples.
Thanks for the offer clutteredup; you won't tell anyone will you?

Depends if your kitchen gets a lot of light. What direction does it face. Particular shades of blue in a north facing kitchen can look cold and uninviting.

can I resurrect this? Please???
Am really warming to the idea of a chocolate colour (may even use that for bedroom...) but I can't seem to find any!
Can anyone point me in the direction of a nice one? Thx

Farrow & Ball
Tanners brown 255 is a dark brown colour
London clay 244 lighter more chalky brown

parachutes · 28/11/2008 16:39

thank you soooo much!

I have painted my last two kitchens orange, looks fab. Well it's a rich orangey egg yokey colour if you can imagine that.

pigleto · 28/11/2008 16:41

I went for a pale lemon. I like it. I hate dark kitchens. You can't see what you are doing.

isgrassgreener · 28/11/2008 16:41

By the way when I look at the colours on screen, as show on the link above, they don't look anything like the large samples I have.
My samples (which are actual paint) look much nicer, especially the London Clay which looks a bit orange on screen

parachutes · 29/11/2008 19:08

Thanks for the suggestions. I will be ordering loads of samples tomorrow!

I would try to go for a contemporary look.

Avoid blues and greens as they give a terrible light as well as looking horrid with exposed bricks.

Pink (but not peach) is always fabulous for the complexion and looks great with exposed bricks. Quite a strong pink would be very contemporary and you could get some modern accessories (lights etc).
