Your Bathroom ideas please!

Would love some ideas for my new bathroom as am feeling very uninspired! Any suggestions will much much appreciated!

We have built an extension so are starting from a blank canvas. We have bought a huge bath which we have built a frame around, which will be tiled.. difficult to explain but basically the bath will be up against the wall with a 6 inch tile border around it. The shower cubicle I have chosen is here

I can not decide on what colour to have! I like very large tiles and quite like the idea of having brown or black but not sure! Also do we tile from floor to ceiling or just half way up wall then paint?

I appreciate this is quite boring but please help me!!

Big tiles great and easy to put in place so big tick for that choice. Tiling floor to ceiling can be a bit oppressive, especially in small rooms or period ones where you mentally expect there to be a picture rail about two metres up. I would probably only put very dark tiles on one wall (with matching tiles in much lighter colour on rest of walls) as again can be a bit oppressive. Also, I think you have to spend a lot of money for dark tiles to work whereas you can get away with cheaper tiles if they are lighter. I would always go for plain ceramics - can't stand those pretend marble/stone ones but that's just me.

Thanks for your reply. I completely agree about the ceramic tiles! The bathroom is fairly small so I don't mind spending a bit more on tiles as there won't be a huge amount needed. I was thinking of having the darker tiles floor to ceiling around the shower then lighter ones half way up around the rest of the room but still can't decide on colours!

If you want to look at some really fantastic modern bathroom designs, go here - It is in norwegian, but BATH is BAD, so have a look. It is lovely.

SugaryBits · 05/11/2008 21:25

Thanks Quint, some great ideas there.

It is a bit "stern" but I am loving the simplicity of it.

ninedragons · 06/11/2008 06:04

I'd go with neutral tiles to dado rail height and then you have the option of changing the look by re-painting, rather than ripping out all the tiles and starting again.

I'd also be pretty cautious about doing an all-over dark colour in a small room. I viewed a flat once with a completely black bathroom and it was horrible. You wouldn't have been able to apply makeup in there.

white every time. You also need to think about if you sell in the future and I personally think white bathrooms are more popular and more attractive to potential purchasers. In our main bathroom we have large white tiles on the floor and large tiles around the bath and wash basin going to around a foot above them. I wanted a little bit of colour so added a couple of rows of small blue mosaic tiles in various shades of blue which are easy to change if you get fed up with the colour and don't make it too dark Have a built in shower and had that tiled entirely in the blue mosaic tiles but because its set back it doesn't look too dark.
we've just had our en-suite bathroom done and although quite a small room we had white tiles on the floor and floor to ceiling and it doesn't look too small and makes cleaning it so much easier than if it was part tiled part painted.
ninedragons - a BLACK bathroom? OMG, what were they thinking?

Furball · 06/11/2008 07:32

Agree white bathroom suite, I wouldn't do anything too say trendy as the style you choose now may look really dated in 5 years time. We plan to tile half way up, and paint. That way if we fancy a change in a few years time we can just change the paint colour and towels.

I'm always at any bathroom showroom pictures - the rooms are massive, bigger than our lounge. Could do with some 'pokey' bathroom pictures for a more realistic look

ninedragons · 06/11/2008 09:25

I think they thought the black would set off the large gold-plated (24k, the estate agent was keen to emphasise) swan-shaped tap set and the black jacuzzi. We need a [vomit] smiley.

MrsBadger · 06/11/2008 09:28

living etc has a good bathroom pics archive, inc poky ones, cheap ones, ones with awkward corners etc
[fumbles for link]
aha

SugaryBits · 06/11/2008 10:20

OOh thanks for all the replies! I did consider white but would like to have another colour in there somewhere! We won't be selling in the forseeable future so I want to do something I love rather than thinking about saleability (if that is even a word!)I think we will go for the tile upto dado height and then paint.

Thanks for the link Mrs B.

I'm off to google gold plated swan taps- sounds gorgeous!

I think all white looks a bit like a morgue. Cream miles better (but, know from experience, much harder to find). Grey in contrasting shades also works.

Ruthiebabes · 06/11/2008 16:26

We are in the process of decorating our bathroom. We are tiling floor to ceiling in Wickes luxor effect marble tiles. They are big tiles, with a matt look. Very reasonably priced, but look just as good as more expensive ones in Topps Tiles.

SugaryBits · 06/11/2008 19:32

I do think all white in our bathroom would make it a bit clinical, I have seen some gorgeous all white bathrooms but don't think it would suit ours. Those tiles are nice Ruthie, might go and have a look in Wickes this weekend.

A friend of mine is having a photo blown up to fill the wall in her bathroom with perspex over it to keep it dry. I reckon it will look great.

SugaryBits · 06/11/2008 19:59

Oh I LOVE that idea mrsmaidamess!

We are all white and blue. White suite, white tiles on floor, white walls and royal blue mosaic behind bath and toilet and red towels. I love it, when it's clean it looks fab, like a tube of toothpaste, but you can see every hair and speck of dirt.

A couple of friends have earthy stone colours. They are warm, classy and best of all, dont show dirt!!!

saggyhairyarse · 07/11/2008 22:05

I really love the purple and white bathroom from that link!

Don't go for sandstone tiles, deffo go for glazed ones, as they just don't wipe over well.

MrsMattie · 12/11/2008 11:34

We've just replaced our all white bathroom because it was horrendously hard to keep clean. It was fully tiled in that trendy white brick style tile and looked sleek, modern and fabulous for, ooh,. about 5 minutes (!!). It just wasn't worth the headache.

We've gone for a slightly less cutting edge but much more practical sandstone tiling now, and although it is more 'family bathroom' than 'hotel bathroom' it is so easy to keep looking good. Choose your colours and amterials very carefully, and don't underestimate how depressed you will be when your spanking new bathroom looks shit within months
