Rewiring, How much does it cost?

We have just been told that our 3 bed house needs to be totally re wired. He suggested a cost of £5000-7000 that doesn't include putting the house back to normal ie: plastering, painting etc.

Anyone know if this is an accurate costing?

sorry here

Pannacotta · 25/10/2008 17:58

Sounds high to me, sorry.
An electrician I know and trust said he had been told to factor approx £1k per bedroom for approx costing of re-wiring, making yours approx 3K, though of course it depends on the spec and materials etc, this would include making good to plaster but not re-painting.
I have had two quotes for our re-wiring, one for £6K and £9K (for 5/6 bedroom house).
I will be getting other quotes before I decide, suggest you do the same, try and get a recommendation if you can. IME it's not just the cost but how clean/tidy they are esp if you are living in the house while the work is being done.

We were quoted 2-3000 for a 3 bed terrace a couple of years ago. I would get another quote if I were you.

my ex is an electrician - he's told me before the going rate is normally about £3-4k for a 3 bed house, depending on actual size of house, putting in extra sockets/lights, etc etc, this would include chasing out & filling in, but not repainting etc. so i think your quote seems high. i'd get a few more to see how representative the first one is

Be careful with the filling in - it can be extremely rough and need plastering afterwards. Ask for refs and speak to previous clients for advice on quality of finishing off.

That sounds high unless you have done something like specify recessed spotlights throughout. I'm having two floors of my, fairly large house rewired and the quote is £4000 including 8 recessed spots in the hall.

Thanks so much for all you replies. the guy who gave me that figure was from an insurance company (although he is an electrician) so he had nothing to gain from over pricing.

Cost us nearly £10k to rewire a 4 bed semi in London last year (including replastering and making good, plus all new light fittings/sockets etc). We got 3 quotes - one was slightly cheaper, but the guy we chose in the end came highly recommended.
