Ilive in a victorian terrace, in the back room is an original fireplace, how do i go about using it to burn wood? do i need permission and how can i do the work needed myself? advice please

You need to make sure the chimney is drawing correctly. Easiest thing to do is get it swept - not expensive(we had it done in our old house few years ago and was £35. If there are any problems with chimney (or flue) sweep can tell you. If there are problems, often expensive and messy.

You also need to be sure you are not in a smokeless zone - if you are, you won't be able to burn wood, but would have to use smokeless fuel (a sort of coal).

Except no one seems to take any notice of that and the majority opinion now is that wood is carbon neutral so burning it should have no impact on environment.
