preferably near Leicester with good public transport links! we are in the middle of the city now and would like to move somewhere rural (i grew up in the middle of nowehere in devon so understand what this means..) but seeing as we don't really know any people who live out in the villages we don't know quite where to start looking.. so feel free to sell your village (metaphorically..) to me! thanks

Great Glen is lovely and the surrounding villages. I like Market Harborough but it's a market town.

FuriousGeorge · 23/09/2008 22:20

Mine is lovely, but only has one bus an hour,so I wouldn't say it has good transport links.Plus there are only 19 private houses here,so properties very rarely come on the market. If you want to rent, the local estate owns the rest of the houses, you'd be looking at £600 pcm for a 2 bed cottage though!

Otherwise,Rothley,Queniborough,Cropston, are all pretty, with good bus services.

If you can think of anywhere you are curious about,I'll be happy to give you the low down. How big a village & how long a commnute would you prefer?

thanks for these ideas..
we are thinking maybe sileby/barrow upon soar as they are on a train line - in fact we are going to look at a house in sileby tomorrow - but i have never heard anyone saying that they are especially nice places and actually they are quite big as villages go - if you have any info FG that would be great, thanks!

Arghh, posted last night & lost it all.
Sileby used to have a reputation for being a bit rough, but it has had a lot of new housing built,so it may have changed. My friend is happy living there, but apparently the secondary schools are not very good.

Barrow has a better reputation, but parts of it do flood badly.Another friend had subsidence problems whilst living there,as a lot of the houses are old & have no foundations, plus the area is known for sand/gravel pits.

They are both very big villages & not really rural, but I think you may struggle to find rural + good transport links.

I'll rack my brains & see what I can come up with.

fairylights · 27/09/2008 13:14

thanks FG - went to see a house in Sileby yesterday and although the house was lovely we (well i certainly did!) realized that we want somewhere a lot more rural than that - by my standards Sileby was a town not a village! Although we are not totally against a market town but we would want to live on the edge of one..really we want to be able to see/be very close by to fields and places to walk etc..
tbh i think we are realizing that dh is going to have to drive to work if we want to live in the kind of place we imagine and we can live with that.
My other main problem is that i really don't like modern houses (having mostly grown up in a wimpey home with paper thin walls - even in the middle of devon!) and only really look at anything with a bit of character or age which obviously hikes the price up a bit. Anyways, please feel free to suggest villages which have a good community feel and school etc that don't necessarily have good public transport links! thanks

Hmmm, know what you mean about modern houses. We live in a 60's house &the walls may well have been constructed from cardboard.I'd never have considered buying it if it wasn't in the village it is though.I've only ever lived in old houses before& love them. But you can't have everything,I suppose.

Right,Rearsby has a lot of older properties, good transport links and a good primary school.Gaddesby is another lovely village, with a fab primary school (my dd goes there). There is a mixture of old & new properties and a good community.Buses once an hour to Leicester & Melton. It is very rural, surrounded by fields.Barsby is a great village too,I don't think there any period properties on the market there, but there are some new builds just being finished. It has no shops or pub though, but an excellent social scene, with skittle nights, parties, feast days, ect.Buses are 1 an hour in both directions again.

I hope some of this might help.If you need the low down on anywhere you've seen, let me know.

Hoby and Frisby are pretty too, although I think Frisby is overpriced,as the train line is very noisy & the planes descending to the airport fly very low over the village too.Good school though.

Queniborough is nice too, quite large, but has good transport links,a good school,2 good pubs, several shops. But it is quite pricey.

thanks FG - will get looking right now! We were out in Colston Bassett yesterday and it reminded me that I do REALLY want to live in the countryside..! You know, we would probably be happy to live in a modern house if it was in the right place and had everything we were looking for.. I know that I am being way too fussy for our budget so my expectations need to be seriously lowered if we are ever going to move!

Have you looked out Rutland way? I grew up in Oakham and there are some lovely villages around-Langham, Whissendine, Essendine, Hambleton. My grandparents lived in Sileby and I agree it's not a village any more. I have lovely memories of it when it was

kiwibella · 05/10/2008 23:29

thanks for sharing... we are also "looking" out this way with a desperate need to leave London but we need to make the right move for our dd (12). I was pretty settled on Market Harborough - Trebuchet, do you mean that a market town is busy? Dh needs to be able to get down to London for work 2 - 3 times a week. Otherwise, it's the lifestyle - enough to keep me and bubs entertained and family time on the weekend.

stretchmarkqueen · 05/10/2008 23:36

Glenfield!!

kiwibella · 05/10/2008 23:50

thanks SMQ... why?

stretchmarkqueen · 05/10/2008 23:57

Lol! Sorry!!

Glenfield is quite rural. Is still quite a small village, but has lots of goings on! Great links to city centre. 2 churches. We live just outside, (council estate!), but it's not really bad. There are at least 2 toddler groups that are a stones throw from 'The Square'. I go to them!! A few nurseries, and 2 good schools. If you want more info, then just ask. Not sure what kind of details you want!!

Lots of new builds and plenty of old style houses as well. A lovely, dog free, park next to Glenfield Primary School. Large co-op. (HAS A SMALL DOROTHY PERKINS)

Oh! It has me, of course!!
