Where to live in York?

We are sort of toying with the idea of moving to York. We know the centre of York reasonably well, but don't know anything much about its outskirts - so does anyone have any advice as to which are the nice residential areas?

We would be looking to spend around £500K, possibly a bit more (up to an absolute maximum of £600K). School catchment isn't an issue, but we would like a decent garden, and we would really like there to be other families nearby as playmates for DS (6) and DD (4). Any tips for areas to avoid would be gratefully received, too!!

Thanks Bellavita, that's good about Woldgate.

Kathy - do you ever go out to village pubs?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 26/09/2008 16:55

Hardly been in a pub at all since having dcs, which is very sad because I love them!
Have never even been in the one in our village, either! Maybe I should get a babysitter and force dh to come out....

bellavita · 26/09/2008 16:59

Nun Monkton has a duck pond....

If it is the nice village with a big duck pond with a stone cross in the middle, located between Hull and York. It's name is Bishop Burton

But students not being around for half the year is one of the problems of living in a studenty area - it means that certain kinds of businesses are unsustainable and close down or relocate; and it can be pretty depressing when half the houses on your street are empty for months at a time. Not very good for a sense of community and neighbourhood.

That said, there is a lot of activity on campus at York in university vacations from conferences and summer schools - don't know how that affects the locals though.

In any case, York Uni's expansion plans are MASSIVE, I would steer well clear of Heslington.

Chandra · 29/09/2008 18:09

York Uni's expansion plans have been there for ages, it will happen eventually but I have been told it will be next year for the last 10 years and still all I can see are open fields! (yeah they would be invading the green belt which may well be the cause of the delay...) Now, that doesn't mean that it can not happen tomorrow...

Kathyis6incheshigh · 29/09/2008 18:16

The building at Hes East began ages ago - lots of fields are muddy holes and the archaeologists have found lots of fun things in them.
It's why the maize maize was somewhere else this year.

Chandra · 29/09/2008 18:59

Exactly, on top of being in the green belt they have found archeological remains... well it seems to me is going to take even longer!

From my experience, you should look outside the city walls because there is a huge premium for living inside. I can recommend Fulford. There are students there but there are some smart areas too. I also like Bootham and Clifton. When I was a student, many years ago, I loved Heslington village centre but it may have changed.
Tang Hall and Acomb do seem to leave something to be desired but it depends where you come from. I used to walk through York late in the evening on my own and never had a problem.

I will personally die happy if I ever manage to live on Stonegate but it's unsuitable for a family.
