Is it true that more houses come on the market in September, traditionally?

I realise this is probably one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions.

In our area there is nothing much available and our dream house has just been sold to someone who sold their house before we managed to, and I despair of finding another house we love as much.

I suppose we could rent for a while when we sell our current house. Have any of you done this, and been patient until the right house came along? The problem is I am impatient! But we want to buy a big wreck and then not move again for 20 years: it needs to be big and in the right location, but we don't mind if it needs tons of work.

I believe the 2 most popular times of year are spring and Sept (so that vendors can move before Xmas, if they sell of course).

So, you might just have good timing.

Also Gordon is about to announce his ideas on saving the economy- so hopefully things will start to get moving a bit now, one way or the other.

naturelover - we sold and moved in March and have been waiting in rented since then. I do not like renting so have an eye on the market constantly. I hope more houses come on the market in september as Im only seeing what I would class as houses that would "make do" because they fit the criteria of 3 beds, off road parking etc. I need a bigger pot to choose from.

September is biggest month to sell homes as (a) people come back from holiday with renewed vigour and feeling focused (b) houses still getting plenty of late summer light (ho, ho, ho) and gardens reasonably well stocked. BUT, if they haven't sold by mid-Oct then likely to become very stale as no one bothers looking in run up to Christmas so vendors will kick heels for at least another two and a half months.
