Just really interested in what people think is a 'reasonable price'. I know it will vary greatly but am currently having quotes and discussions (!) with DP about how much we will need to spend. the kchcen we have at present is at the end of its useful life, it is so old we cannot get new appliances even as they won't fit into the unusually small housings!!

WE have had quotes (to totally gut and re-fit, including appliances) from £6700 from B and Q to £14500 from Moben (picked out better appliances mind you for Moben).

Dp is stunned even by £6700. I think this is really reasonable- any opinions/ experiences much appreciated!

We paid about 6k for the gutting and building works (knocking through a wall, blocking off a window and bilding a false wall and stuff, and about 8K for the units and fitting (magnet, wood framed cupboards and wooden worktop).

Inlcuded range cooker and fridgefreezer/dishwasher.

Agree that the ikea kitchens look excellent value for money.

We paid about 6k which covered knocking a wall down and having RSJ fitted, installing new units etc, sorting electrics and plumbing, sink, cooker hood, boxing in boiler, tiling and oak flooring.

Units, work top & flooring were Howdens. I'm not as impressed as I could be with the Howdens unit quality but not too bad and definitely good value for the price we paid.

It depends on the value of the house, imo.

I would prob happily spend 5% of a property's value on replacing the kitchen.

Max I'd go to is prob 10% and only then if I was going to stay for a good while.

NomDePlume · 01/09/2008 10:46

Re Ikea, I don't think they do fitting so you'd have to find an independent kitchen fitter (unless you happen to know a DIY whizz).

We've just spent over £40k on our kitchen. It?s a large room and the kitchen was bespoke handmade. V expensive but we're very pleased with it.

ours was about 11k in the end
needed a complete overhaul though - electrics sorted out, walls plastered, new floor tiles, all new appliances, wall tiles, cost of labour, all decorated

Fimbo · 01/09/2008 13:14

My friend's kitchen (not including tiling and electrics) cost £8k from B & Q. £5k of that was the fitting!

I've just closed my front door to the Kitchens Direct guy!

He wasn't any pushier than I expected him to be tbh.

I quite liked the design and the price included dishwasher, units, work surfaces but not cooker/hob etc. Came in at £6800 if I booked it today.

Am quite annoyed as I told them my budget on the phone twice and I told him as soon as he came thru the door.

I went to Ikea yesterday and mine does do fitting. They also do design for £80 refunded on a kitchen over £2k.

Their FAKTUM range is very comprehensive and very flexible in terms of finish and work surface etc and very very cheap.

If you can grab a catalogue it comes with squared paper and all the types of cabinet in pop out form so you can make your own model at home.

I'll be doing this over the next few days and costing it all out.

I've heard great things about howdens but I am on a really really tight budget.

midnightexpress · 01/09/2008 13:21

We spent about 6k and that included Howdens units, new worksurfaces, a couple of walls plastered, tiles (but not tiling) and a new fridge, oven, hob and sink. Kept the old floor and decorated ourselves.

This time (new flat) we're painting the old units and getting new worksurfaces from Ikea, new floor from the internet and new tiles (but using a load that we had left over from the last kitchen), so hoping it'll be much cheaper - keeping the appliances and the sink. Ah, the credit crunch.

5-6k sounds about the least you could do a 'proper' refit for imo.

Paddlechick666 · 01/09/2008 13:29

wow, that seems like really good value. was it a long time ago?

might give howdens a call........

weblette · 01/09/2008 13:31

We've just spent £6000 having ours "made-over". A carpenter friend has moved doors round and re-jigged all the carcasses. We've added a range cooker, new quartz worksurface and ceramic sinks.

It's a very early Mark Wilkinson one so the units were in good nick, it'll now last me at least another 15 years hooray!

Finding the range was interesting - we wanted a Rangemaster and the cheapest place for the model was actually Boots!

Tommy · 01/09/2008 13:58

weblette Bots is not the first place to go when you think of new cookers is it?! I didn't even know they did them - I've just had a look though and they are ver reasonable

Tommy · 01/09/2008 14:04

or Boots even....

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 01/09/2008 14:19

Have an ikea oak kitchen units and work surfaces cost @ 1500 and had all new appliances neff double oven and hob, aeg FF bosch dishwasher and hotpoint wd for 2-2500 iirc from biasco.com

the online planner from ikea although massive to download is great to see whet things will look like.

wombleprincess · 01/09/2008 15:35

thats a bit of how long is a piece of string question - how much do you want to spend? what sort of look do you want? in last house spent 6k all in. new house will be spending 20k all in.
you can do it for 2-3 kincl appliances if you are willing to do some of the work

wombleprincess · 01/09/2008 16:24
