Can anyone recommend a wooden floor company in the Herts/Beds area?

Don't really want to use one of the carpet chains. Would prefer an independent and local firm.

Do you want them to fit it as well? I know someone who recently got a wooden floor from that Tile Depot on Hatfield Rd (St Albans) but I think they fitted it themselves. They said that place had the best prices though... don't know if they offer a fitting service

Yes, do want it fitted as well. Off to St A at the weekend, so I'll check them out. Perhaps they can recommend a fitter if they don't do it themselves.

Any others? Luton, Harpenden, Hitchin area would be better still.

Is that Marshalswick Furnishing? I've been looking on yell.com and could only find that one in Marshalswick (my yellow pages doesn't cover St Albans).

Any more in the Luton or Hitchin area? Has anyone used 'Love Your Floor' (or something like that) in Hitchin? Went in there this morning and they seemed friendly and knowledgeable.

Yes that's the one Muffin - there is a furniture shop and then another branch a little further along which does carpet and flooring.

Have you tried the one in Codicote? the floor store. they do wooden floors and fitting. We have used them in the past.

You two might be able to answer my next question. What sort of finish should I go for (or avoid) if I wanted to get a Scooba (that is the hard floor one, isn't it)?

Dh says you need a sealed floor (ie varnished rather than hard wax oil).

on the contrary, i have hard wax oil and tis lovely darlink. [apologies, am on the mateus]

British Hardwoods, is who we sourced our oak from. fitted it ourselves though. v nice it is too.
and this lot, timber neutral do gorgeous woods, and when we visited them they said they had really wide plank solid oak at an even better price. grrr. we did get the mango wood for our bathroom from them, and its lovely.

varnished, or laquered, is great inasmuch as the laquer is harder wearing. BUT, when it does go, you have to strip the whole lot to re-varnish. with waxoil, you can do spot repairs without having to strip the whole floor. AND you can still feel the grain of the wood, whereas a coated in varnish/laquer floor feels like it might as well be a veneer. to me.

Amphibimum - MM was asking specifically what she could use a Scooba on. My answer is correct. It's got nothing to do with taste - we also have and love hard wax oil, but we can't use the Scooba to clean it.

I know they won't (we've tried it) unless you are prepared to re-wax it every time. Ours is still awaiting re-waxing after our attempt.

A robomop could at least dust yours for you though, which is better than nothing!
