I am going to look at it as it seems too good to be true for the price!

ListersSister · 11/07/2008 11:42

Is this a house just off Lewes Rd?
I am assuming it is on at that price because it is close to an unpopular infant school and in the catchment for the poorest performing secondary. I think if you lived there you wouldn't get to go to any of the more popular schools, which will obviously affect prices, esp in Brighton where the schools vary such a lot.
Of course, if schools are no longer relevant to you Noddy, then that is no problem. There is talk of a big redevelopment further along Lewes Rd though which might be worth bearing in mind. Plus I think there is an air quality problem at Vogue Gyratory which is very close by.
It is a handy place to live, but wouldnt be one for me if I am honest - and sorry, I know I wasn't asked!

noddyholder · 11/07/2008 11:43

i am just a nosey parker! Also wouldn't live there if i had little children.

allgonebellyup · 11/07/2008 14:11

yes, on second thoughts i am not too keen on the Lewis rd area or the schools.

Is Goldstone rd a good area in Hove, i know its v near Poets corner?
i can see the nearest primary school looks fab but not so sure about the secondary!

Elm Grove area any good?
i think Elm Grove school is meant to be good?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 21/07/2008 22:07

Elm grove is v central and it is a good school.Nice family area but terrible parking although you wouldn't need a car living there

allgonebellyup · 22/07/2008 08:34

do you know Carisbrooke rd/Helens rd?

i know its v hilly and hard to park round there! but is it a good place too live, ie not too near rough areas?
i looked at Fairlight school which is near, and its got bad reports/results really.

Fairlights not as good as Elm grove.I viewed a house in arisbrooke it was nice but over priced for how small it was but is not rough at all so in terms of a nice place to be it is.

allgonebellyup · 22/07/2008 17:59

ooh the house i like is in Carisbrooke rd, 3 bedder including loft extension, its on for £225k which seems v reasonable.
i know on one side of the road there are only about 10 houses and on the other side there are a lot more - did the house you saw have a tiny patio garden? (i guess they all do?!)

Sorry for all the annoying Qs!!!

The house we saw was lovely with a small patio. It was on the side facing down elm grove not up iyswim.Room in the roof is good

Sorry to resurrect ancient thread but just stumbled on this and "the wrong side" of fiveways sounds like exactly where I want to live! But where is this mystical place? Is it the area around Goldstone School/Knoll park?

Is it still a nice non pretentious place to live 5 years since the start of this thread?

Thank you!

iheartdusty · 11/07/2013 17:06

that area around Goldstone school would be Hangleton. It is definitely nice and non-pretentious!

wrong side of 5ways must surely be further east or north of 5ways?

noddyholder · 11/07/2013 17:07

Both lovely although parking atrocious!

BeaTrootfull · 13/07/2013 02:25

The wrong side of 5ways is probably Hollingdean/the dip. It is much cheaper than other nearby areas - but they have more obvious charm. Heading out North and getting to Hollingbury are larger more suburban houses. I just saw a house off Surrenden Rd after it curls round Varndean School and was impressed by lovely views over the city and to the sea. Gardens are also bigger there. It is cheaper because it's further out but has a more peaceful atmosphere I think. And actually, still not far from either Fiveways or Preston Drove. Buses aren't bad either. The hills don't make life easy though and if you want to walk or cycle, West Hove is better, or maybe Portslade.

Hangleton or areas north of Aldrington Station as mentioned above are also good. Secondary school could be Blatchington Mill which seems to have a not bad reputation. Hangleton proper has an old church but is largely modern developments (now not so new) but if you are a fan of green open spaces and planned mid century developments it's rather lovely (in parts!) The bit near Aldrington is 30s houses. There's a pedestrian underpass so it's pretty convenient for shops etc.

Good luck with the search!

Just stumbled across this thread & need a bit of advice. Can anyone tell me if the Elm Grove area is a nice place to live? We're planning a move to Brighton but don't know the city very well at all. We were originally looking at Hove/Seven Dials but it seems we could get so much more for our budget if we're willing to hike up 'muesli mountain'. Are there any roads to avoid? The roads we've looked at include Bernard Road, which we liked because of the trees & the view, but is this area too studenty for a young family? Any help greatly received!
