Anyone moved from London to Cambridge?

What was your experience?
How did you find property prices compared (depending on where you lived in London of course?)

Has it been a positive move and is it 'safer' than London and more pleasant?

It's a bit of a long term objective at the moment but we are starting to think about making the move so info would be great.

Prufrock - it's a lovely house isn't it

this one nice too but not so near the station

skippythedogfromthesea · 06/07/2008 00:08

That is a perfect-looking house Theblonde - just the sort of thing we'd go for. That said I'm not sure dh would go for the village idea but maybe the garden would win him over!

Gosh and it's really quite reasonable compared to something like that here. We could trade in our house for that and have really quite a lot left over!

The town is actually quite small so some of the villages are really close

Prufrock · 06/07/2008 16:30

That house is outside the actual village- a good 15 minutewalk to the shops, but much closer to town - a 10 minute walk up to Waitrose, and they've built a new road just 300 yards up the road that provides a shortcut to Addenbrookes -I bet you could bike to the main shopping area in less than 15 minutes.

Think we're going to come up and do a little reccy in the next few weeks. Dh was at uni there but hasn't been for a while so we really need to see how much has changed and get a feel for the neighbourhoods etc.

Quite like the look of the Next Gen health club - that'd be nice to join too!

Next Gen is good, but JJB are opening a spanking new one in the autumn which is rumoured to be amazing. And the best classes are at Greens (my PT is studio director) though they don't really like kids and don't have a creche.

Want the tennis that they have at Next Gen though...

you need indoor courts on a day like today....

If you buy that house, you will also want to join the local tennis club!

Coming up today on a reccy.....lovely weather for it too.

how did the move go?
lilymaid - what's the commute into london like? what station do you go from?
planning a move myself so keen for information.

Millarkie · 10/05/2009 18:27

We moved out a couple of years ago. Looked at the houses around the station but we would be swapping like-for-like with our London house, same cost and no larger. Didn't like the 'flatness' of most of Cambridge itself, and drove South until we found a hill .
Ended up moving near Saffron Walden (but still on the train line) which gives me an OK commute to London and dh has a 25 minute or so commute into Cambridge.

Lilymaid · 10/05/2009 18:35

Messymissy - I commute into Liverpool St from Whittlesford. It takes 1 hour 9 minutes (on a good day but you get a seat - unless the Kings X line is down). I then take a tube to work. My commute is almost 2 hours each way. Consequently I am a sudoko expert.
Kings X line much faster into London from Cambridge but would mean a longer tube journey/inconvenient bus route for me.

Hi all - interested to see this thread - I just started one myself a couple of weeks ago as we are on the verge of moving from north London to Cambridge. Think we are going to be going to a village slightly north - not ideal for DH who will be commuting but fits the bill in lots of other ways. am interested to know how others have found the move from London as although I know deep down it's the right thing to do I keep getting panics. Read through Time Out at the weekend and kept thinking about all the things I wouldn't be able to do - or at least not do so easily. Also keen to be in a village where I can make friends as don't want to feel isolated.

Skippythedog - did you make the move? Would be interested to find out your thoughts.

Cambridge is very far from being Sleepy Hollow, there are plenty of activities on at all times of year (not only in term time). Forget Time Out and look at Local Secrets.

Mins · 12/05/2009 23:56

Yeah I realise Cambridge is not Sleepy Hollow - nice idea maybe! Many thanks for the Local Secrets link - have just had a quick look at it. I'm sure it will be fine I'm just having a few wobbles about whether or not it's the right thing to do!
