One of my sons is looking to buy a house in Prestwich, Manchester. He is single and has approx £315000 to spend. There are both semi detached and terraced in this bracket. Which would you buy and why?

Depends where he wants to be, proximity to services etc. Does he drive and need somewhere to park? Does he want to be near the Metro, wine bars and restaurants?
A semi is more likely to have a garden.

Are we talking new or old build? New/recent build should have off road parking as part of the planning conditions, except in some town centre locations where it is considered that there is already adequate parking provision. I live in a 10 year old terrace, one space and a garage that my car would fit in if I tidied it up, very little noise from the neighbours. My previous house, 60's semi, garage in a separate block, otherwise street parking, some noise from the neighbours. I grew up in a Victorian terrace, on-street parking and the walls were the special sort of brick that amplifies sound. In an ideal world, I would have bought a slightly bigger new semi, but they were £40k more, affordable but I wouldn't have been able to retire as early. It's look and choose what suits you best, does the terrace have rear access to put the bins out, do you want a big/small/no garden, how much traffic passes etc

If you post the links we can give you better advice. I know Prestwich quite well!

It is just a general question. He has seen both types of property online and is wondering which way to go. I realise it is individual property-dependent. There are obviously pros and cons for both types of property. Parking would be an issue, but he would be happy with on-street parking, I think.
Which are the best areas of Prestwich for properties in that price range? A lot of properties seem to be in streets with numerous cars, and he doesn't want to be involved in parking wars!

He needs his own off road parking space, the only way to not have on-street parking wars.

My DD lives in Prestwich, just near Heaton Park about 10 minutes walk from 2 tram stops. She has no issue on her street the with parking. Houses near tram stops will be significantly more expensive. Hers is a mid terrace and she paid £350k for it earlier this year!
