Bad plastering job?

Hi not sure if this is the right sort of place to be asking this but desperately in need of some advice. Paid over £500 just over a week ago to get the whole living room ceiling plastered following a leak from the bathroom above. Since then we’ve had it decorated and moved all the furniture back in the room. Now we’ve got lights etc back in the room you’re able to see the work a lot clearer. I was sat there last night and couldn’t help starting to notice all these imperfections (as photographed, the whole ceiling looks like this for context). There’s also a reasonably deep crack right down the middle of the ceiling which I’m not sure is right following just a week of the work being done ( despite the decorator reassuring me was normal). Just after some advice really from someone who works in this trade/ has had work done to the home. Is this normal? And if not how can I get it fixed? A decent decorator or does the whole ceiling need redoing? I’m at my wits end about it now I’ve noticed it😅

You’ve painted too soon. The plaster hasn’t had time to dry. For a full ceiling I’d leave 4weeks min.

Daisysimply · 11/08/2026 18:44

Oh really? We were recommended to wait 3-4 days from the plasterer. Is that what’s caused this?

And if so what can we do to rectify the issue?

I would agree that it’s been painted too soon.

Also what’s the weather like where you are when they were plastering. Plastering in this heat is awful, it’s goes off too quickly.

Daisysimply · 11/08/2026 18:57

It was definitely warm. Oh no! Any suggestions on what we can do to fix it or is it likely to look better as it dries fully?

It's a bit on the uneven side. Try Tikkurila anti-reflex paint good for hiding the bumps. You could also fill and sand down the worst bits.

EatenTooMuchChocolateAgain · 11/08/2026 20:03

You should have left it to dry much longer. Did the decorator do a mist coat before the normal paint?
Had the plaster dried all over a light / pale even colour?
The ceiling might have dried too quickly in places due to the hot weather.
I’m no expert but I think you’ll need to remove all that paint asap?

Daisysimply · 11/08/2026 20:12

Oh no, that’s so frustrating😫 yes he did a mist coat first then 1-2 layers on normal ceiling paint. It looked light in colour to me but gathering by people saying we should have waited 4 weeks I’ll assume the week we waited definitely wasn’t long enough! We’re going to get someone round to tell us what we can do to try sort it out!

Rushed job and heat will have made it go off quick. How many times did the plasterer go over it? Did he trowel too fast? It’s so hot right now did he put an additive in to stop it drying so fast? Was it over boards or your old ceiling? And if latter was it prepped right? (Bonded etc) was the leak fully dry? Lots of factors that could cause a bad job, not just the tradesman. Unlikely the paint though. Ask your plasterer. A good plasterer won’t want a bad review.

Daisysimply · 11/08/2026 21:51

i Know he said it was a harder job than expected and he had to re go over the plaster due to bubbling. Wouldn’t say it was rushed as he was here from 9am- nearly 7pm doing it. Ceiling had leaked months ago so was properly dry. He had to scrape off old artex then go in with the plaster. Not sure as to the answers to the other questions as I wasn’t here when the work was being carried out

If the new plaster was bubbling that was because what it was going on was still damp.

you need to get all of this off, leave the timber and “bones” to properly dry before doing anything else.

You can get machines to help but really the best course of action would be to get it off now then leave until spring / summer before plastering.

Yes.

We have just had our lounge replastered and our plasterer told us not to paint for at least 4 weeks, 6 if we could.

It may look and feel like the plaster is dry after a couple of days but it takes weeks to dry out properly and be ready to put paint on.

Then when you paint you need to make sure its prepped properly and has a mist coat on.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 12/08/2026 07:47

If it was just a skim coat (not a thick layer over brick) a few days should be long enough to wait.

yes it is lumpy though. Maybe he couldn’t get it right in the heat or it dried too fast. I think you could have it skimmed over, I had a similar ceiling and had it skimmed and it was perfect afterwards. TBH the plasterer should redo it (maybe when the weather has calmed down).

I wouldn't go back to this plasterer, OP says it was bubbling so he kept applying more.

If it was bubbling as he did it, STOP. Work out the cause and solve that.
Maybe the weather was too hot. Maybe the plaster was too wet. Maybe the surface hadn't been prepped well. Maybe there was an issue with the artex she mentions. Maybe the ceiling structure hadn't dried out properly from the leak. Maybe a combination of these. But layering on more when you already know there is a problem is foolish. And has now created a much bigger issue for OP to sort out. You can't trust this plasterer.

Yeah painted too soo and plaster probably went off too fast. But honestly it’s not even that bad

I agree it’s not too bad, my concern would be how it ages. if it wasn’t well done, as appears to be the situation, the issues may appear in time and it would be better to prevent that now.
