Durable carpets - is wool a bad idea?

We are needing to re carpet our house and I’ve read quite negative reviews of wool carpets not wearing well. I want something fairly tough and long lasting.

Has anyone got any advice or insights on buying carpets and what to consider. We have a whole house to do but can only do it in stages so need to find one that won’t go out of stock in the next year.

Have two children (10 & 13), no pets, in case that’s relevant.

We have wool carpets and they are lovely but I wouldn't get again as we've had trouble with carpet moths over the years.

My wool carpets are coming up to 25 years old. Never had anything other than wool, and always last forever. Our lounge needs changing, but the upstairs are still like new. We did have a moth problem in a wardrobe, but that's only happened recently. I have mostly wood downstairs, and that's in a terrible state.

Just changed to a decent synthetic after years of carpet moths - would not go back to wool!

I have wool on the stairs and wouldn’t get it again, drives me mad. Traps every bit of dirt and very hard the get the appearance of little stuck ‘bits’ out with the hoover. May be ok if you got a colour with ‘bits’, if that makes sense, mine is cream. Looks all trodden down on the stairs as well. No moth issues, but only had it 3yrs. Was expensive as well.

I think wool carpets made now resist moths to a much higher degree.

You could go for an 80/20 wool mix, all the advantages of wool with the strength of synthetic.

Mine are all 100% polyprop, the quality of them feels like a wool blend. My friend had so much carpet destroyed by moths and it was absolutely awful to see the damage done under furniture where she was unaware of it happening.

My carpets are described as bleach cleanable. I have spilled whole cups of tea or coffee on them and you cannot tell where that happened but I do have a carpet cleaner at home.

Go to a carpet shop and feel a good quality fully synthetic against at wool blend.

I always tend to buy 80/20 wool, they have worn well, twist carpets are good and bought them from John Lewis

I have this mix in my bedrooms and landing, in one room it's 14 years old, in the others it's 26 years old, still looks good.

My son had polypropylene in his previous house because there was a moth infestation, they did not wear well and had that slight synthetic sheen that is unattractive.

My rugs are 100% wool and still look great after 20 years. My parents have several 100% wool room size rugs which are around 45 to 50 years old and are not worn. But they are excellent quality and were expensive.

We have always had 80/20 wool carpets. Our last hall, stairs and landing carpet was still looking good after 30 year of family life, including bottles of milk being dropped, having Warhammer figures painted on, a minor radiator leak and hoards of teenage boys.
We moved before it needed replacing. Our latest wool carper was treated to repel moths and I occasionally go round the edges with a moth repellent spray.
i have concerns about man made fibres on the stairs, after seeing the horrendous friction burns a friend sustained after falling down hers.

Glad we don't have wool carpets any more, the carpet moths got them. But mostly glad we don't have carpets downstairs at all. We got Quickstep laminate planks, easy to clean, slightly more 'give' than LVT and cheaper than wood/engineered wood. During the hot weather we've been very glad there's not carpet.

80:20 mix for carpets

OliveCat25 · 10/08/2026 10:56

We have 50% Wool and 50% Polypropylene loop carpet. It’s meant to be moth-resistant. Have had these for over a year now and still look great, hard wearing and clean well. I have cat and young child so longevity was important for me
