Daughter's uni accommodation just broken into - changing locks?

Daughter moved into her uni house on Weds, 3 of the 7 room keys were not available. Each key opens front and back doors and individual bedroom.

1am this morning and there are intruders in the house. Police called and arrived swiftly, seem to think they are former tenants and used one of the missing keys to enter.

Obviously girls now feel unsafe to stay in the house when there are 3 missing keys and have already had intruders. Landlord was called at 2am and said the locks would be changed within the week.

Where do the girls stand with insisting the locks are changed today? Tennancy agreement states tennants aren't allowed to change the locks but quick research suggests landlord should change locks between tennancies and obviously now there has been a security incident with crime reference number. Any hive mind advice would be welcome please, am fretting from 200 miles away...

On the external door is there a latch they can put across / down to prevent access when they are in the property? Obvs depends on the type of lock. Or an additional inside bolt or similar

(why are they at uni btw? Are they UK?)

The latch is part of the lock, so can be opened from inside without a key but needs a key to open from outside. No additional latch/lock on either door. Not sure if they're allowed to add an additional lock (but absolutely will if not resolved today).

Still at uni as they all now have jobs so not coming home for summer (sob)

They could do the old fashioned thing and barricade the door at night. And don't leave valuables in their rooms. Upsetting for them but they only have a few more days before the locks are changed. And the old tenants probably assumed the house was empty and won't come back now.

Yes I agree with @Ohthisheat and even if not old tenants they don’t tend to return.
I get the (sob). Will you visit over the summer?

Locks changed by the landlord before lunch today, much relief all round.

We are planning visits around my work and hers, but she is mostly doing weekends so going to be tricky! This is harder than when she left a year ago!
