Tapping Noise When Water Is Running

I've noticed recently that when our water is running in the bathroom (from both the electric shower and the taps) that this kind of tapping/ticking type noise starts up after a minute or two then it stops a couple of minutes after the water stops. I've checked for leaks and don't see anything obvious. Any ideas anyone?

It might be something to do with a water pressure valve.

What temperature is the water?

How old is the plumbing?

It seems to happen with both hot and cold water, as to age of plumbing, the house was built early 80s but not sure about replacement etc, we've only been here two years

I think it is most likely expansion and contraction of the pipes when they change length from room temperature to the temperature of the water. They are supported in tight fitting clips, pretty sure to be plastic, and the pipes jerk as they pull through. The ticking usually starts fast, then slows down and stops as the temperature equalises.

When central heating pipes do it, it is worse when they rub on notches in joists. It is possible to use felt lagging or pads which enable them to slide silently. If you can identify where it is happening you might be able to loosen or lubricate the clips. There are brass ones available where it would be easier because they are assembled in two halves. Sometimes you can do it by removing the clips near elbows where the pipes change direction, enabling them to bend slightly.

Thanks. We do get the ticking with the central heating but this seems different tbh. I need to get someone in to look at the heating anyway as we have a pressure issue and maybe a leak somewhere so might get them to have a look at that too

@AmandaHoldensLips we did have a pressure issue and got things fitted to dampen the clanging when the water is stopped but this noise happens when water is running

Waterhammer?

Waterhammer?

We had this issue a while ago and got it sorted, this is definitely something else going on
