Electricity only?

Had anyone got experience of a flat with only electricity no gas?
The first had a weird thin boiler for the central heating and an immersion heater for the hot water.
This seems really weird to me... And expensive?

I’m 51, lived in 11 homes, not one has had gas. Either electricity only or that and Oil.

whats your question OP? Whats your expectation and your concern?

Thank you for your post. I'm looking at renting a flat with only electricity. I'm worried that the bills will be much higher than with gch.
How have you find your energy bills??

I’ve only got electricity in my house. I don’t have an equivalent sized house with GCH to compare the cost to, and I’ve been here 15 years so the energy prices are insane compared to those days…

My gut tells me it’s more expensive. I do all I can eg have a day/night rate tariff and do as much washing etc as possible in the cheaper hours. Not sure I’d want to hear my neighbour’s washing machine at 1am in a flat!

I also have an electric car and charge that when it’s cheapest, which means overall my fuel bill (house and car) are lower than if I was buying diesel.

I mean, I’d prefer to cook with a gas hob but you get used to that.

Can the LL show you a copy of the electric bill?

We once had a house with electric only, it was extremely expensive compared to having gas. It had an immersion heater type thing for water and individual electric radiators in every room.

Electric boilers can be very expensive to run. They absolutely rinse the EPC. Alternatively HHRSH are more affordable - not as cheap as gas but better

It is expensive. My bills in summer are around £100 a month and sometimes double that in winter. First floor (top floor) 2 bed, 2 bath.

2 adults 1 teenager (teenager is at dad's 50%) one adult works outside the home, one from home.

Flat is tricky as its grade 2 listed with very high ceilings and single glazed sash windows so obviously much colder anyway than something more modern

DH and I lived in a central london flat for 18yrs. No gas. It was surrounded on all sides and due to being a long shape, only had windows at either end. We used fans and air con FAR more than heating because it was roasting hot. The boiler was heated on economy 7 so at night and I don't recall the bills being exceptional. It was just DH and myself though.

We're electric only. We used to have oil filled or ceramic radiators, all individual per room, no central control, which was so expensive. It was also an absolute pain trying to keep an even temperature throughout. I added smart thermostats and switches, which made it much easier and a bit cheaper.

We now have a heat pump and solar panels, and radiators with their own thermostats, and so far it's been much less expensive.

My friend's property is all electric; it's expensive.

Energy from Electricity costs about four times as much (per kWh) as energy from gas. If you have a big cylinder, you might be able to get a cheap off-peak tariff.

Storage heaters are OK for people who get up early, are at home all day, and go to bed early. So some retired people and some with small children.

If it is a modern block and you have heated flats above you, below you, and to the sides of you, this will reduce heat loss from cold surfaces.

Rental flats that are Electric-only often come on the market after the tenants have seen their first winter bill.
