Some countries use a fine gauze over the windows for flyscreens, and I have recently seen it here.

I use a powerful extractor fan which removes the need to open kitchen windows.

Watching for ideas as I leave my French door open all day and the flies are driving me nuts

Which type of fly? Blue bottles or fruit flies? They are attracted to different things.
I use a trap with vinegar/washing up liquid and cling film https://www.thespruce.com/get-rid-of-fruit-flies-1388144

For bluebottle flies, I'm yet to find anything effective inside, other than installing fly screens. In the garden I have these traps. They smell like something rotting but really do work. I can't say if they prevent flies going into the house though? https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7571109?utm_custom6=LIA&deeplink=true&gclsrc=aw.ds&&cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59157|acid:804-872-0397|cid:20330964438|agid:|tid:|crid:|nw:x|rnd:12991561416339583003|dvc:c|adp:|mt:|loc:9045062&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20330964438&utm_term=7571109&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=&utm_custom2=804-872-0397&GPDP=true&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19671816703&gbraid=0AAAAAD9II9mQVc2Y-0xUNfbw23K6pnxCS&gclid=CjwKCAjwl97RBhBWEiwAa9rbXVPKSRCkMcV3lDq8RYsJZKGlkqxWlNM3uWBQUpnTNqC_Rg_DySvwmBoCkHAQAvD_BwE

You need a fly screen for the doors/ windows to stop them coming in. We got one of those JML magnetic mesh ones for the French doors (we have the doors open all day for the cats to come and go) and it works a treat. No flies! Kitchen smells just attract the little buggers so you have to stop them getting in.

We have big bunches of fresh lavender in a couple of vases. I don’t think flies like it - really seems to work as there are none and our French doors and windows are open all day, and the windows are open wide all night.

I gave up and just bought a electric fly zapper that just sits on the kitchen side waiting for the flies to go to it

This is gonna sound weird but I approach them with a swatter - I don’t actually swat - and as they’re usually banging their heads up against a window, I leave them all open, and say, loudly, GET OUT OR DIE whilst wielding said swatter.
It works remarkably well, I’d say 95% of them suddenly find the open window almost immediately.
I am not even joking. 🤷‍♀️

Pots of mint growing at doorways apparently work the same as lavender. I have several different kinds growing around my French doors seem to work.

MaybeIamJustABitch · 22/06/2026 20:54

Eucalyptus leaves in a pot work well, but not for the bastarding fruit flies, who seem to be a lot more evasive this year when clapping one’s hands over them, and weirdly a lighter brown body colour compared to last year. We’ve tried every suggestion going, even red wine, which they used to like. 😡

I was looking at these, but I was wondering how my dog would walk through them. Do your cats manage okay?

When I buy my new house (moving in 2 months) I am going to invest in some fly screens for windows and french doors.

Yes the cats manage fine, the magnets are good in that they hold the two parts together but the cats can push them apart and get through whenever they want. We did have to train them a bit and 'post' them through until they got the hang of it but they have no problem with it now.

When I buy my new house (moving in 2 months) I am going to invest in some fly screens for windows and french doors.

We recently renovated (England) and had all new windows and doors. I specifically asked the window company about screen options and they looked at me sideways like I'd asked for glass made from unicorn sweat! For bifolds, their only option was a massive screen which slowly came down over the entire door, so to go outside you had to 'very slowly' raise it all up again. I used to live abroad and every window/door had efficient screen options. I just can't understand the UK where there are still lots of flies and other bugs which come into homes, yet very limited screen options.

I have an industrial fly killer which kills all flies.
I use one of these around the windows in the rest of the house. It's a pen of insecticide and I just wipe around the glass and it kills flies.
In the bedroom I have made mesh fly screens that are velcroed to the frame so you can leave windows open and nothing comes in. Theae are the best solution but expensive to buy ready made.
