Tiny en-suite of it worth it?

We are currently renovating our house, and the plumber working on our main bathroom, mentioned that it would be really easy to add a small ensuite bathroom to the main bedroom. However, when we’ve explored this in more detail the maximum size of the finished room would be 1.5 m x 1.5 m.

I’ve drawn a scale drawing (1 square = 10cm) and can fit a compact toilet a 800 mm quadrant shower cubicle and a smallish vanity sink but I’m not sure whether it’s going be so small as to be unusable.

What are your experiences of very small bathrooms? Are they actually worth it? We are a family of 5, with two adult children at home and a teenager so another shower would be a real bonus. There is a window and the remaining bedroom would be 4.3m by 3.5m so plenty of room as wardrobes are already fitted to another wall.

Before anyone asks, the shower room cannot be any bigger 1.5m x 1.5m maximum.

I’ve attached a plan that shows my working out.

My ensure is 1.2 x 2.5.

my shower is a 700cm one - would that be an option instead of a corner 800cm - I think you would get more usable space inside it.

700 isn’t huge but it’s not enough to shower in.

Our main bathroom and our en-suite are both under 2x2m (a little bit bigger than what you describe). One has a bath/ shower and one is a wet room. I really thought they’d feel small but they don’t, they’re perfect. I’d just suggest keeping it simple to promote the illusion of space. Don’t go for any fussy fittings or tiles.

We have a tiny ensuite with wc, sink and shower and a pocket door and it is great. We are a family of 3 and have 2 other bathrooms but OH and I still use this one daily as it is so convenient.

we don’t use it at night though in case it disturbs the other person sleeping but then there is another bathroom off the landing.

Reading this thread inspired me to measure our ensuite which I’ve never considered “tiny” - 1.52 x 1.53 metres. The door opens into the bedroom which makes a big difference I think. If you’ll excuse the tatty towels I’ll take a pic.

I have a wet room along my hallway and refuse to have an ensuite. The smell would turn my stomach. I like a bedroom to be a bedroom.

What smell? We have an ensuite. It doesn't smell.

Slimline toilet, heated ladder towel rail. The plumber recommended always have a full size basin if you can fit it in, so we did.

I'd absolutely add an ensuite without question, especially if there's five of you! We've got three toilets and two showers in our house, one being a small ensuite. It's an unvented system so we can run both showers at the same time with no pressure loss. We often use both showers or 2 toilets at the same time, I'd say go for it! I'd never want to go back to having one bathroom/toilet in a house. When you gotta go you gotta go 😅

There are toilets with a sink above

This

We are also looking to put a small ensuite in and have been looking at these toilets with the sink above and for an en-suite seem fine. Saves space on having to find space for a separate sink also.

I agree on pocket or sliding doors too which will also give more space.

Definetely worth it no matter how small.
Saves cluttering up the main bathroom and you can organise all your own toileteries whatever way you want.
Always handy to have a second toilet too

Get overdoor hooks or shelves too for hanging dressing gown, make up bag etc

Just toilet and basin, for use in the night mainly is very handy if you don't think a shower or bath will fit in.

Thank you so much for posting the photos, your layout is almost exactly the same as the layout we have planned. Seeing it in real life definitely has reassured me that it will be a decent size and worth doing.

Victoria plumb have a decent online bathroom planner. Just put in your dimensions and give it a go. You add actual Victoria plumb products into it and can see in 3D so gives you a proper sense of what’s possible
