Help - finishing wax on bannister looks awful - how to remove?

so I painted part of my bannister with chalk paint and tonight started to apply Rustoleum Finishing Wax to give a wood-effect finish.

it looks absolutely terrible - very poor finish and so difficult to get it right on the spindles. All my fault - nothing to do with the product.

I’m calling it a day and realise it looks bad but can anyone please give me some advice about the best way to remove freshly applied wax?

I suspect this is going to be a big job and could literally cry right now as it’s the end of a hallway project and everything else is looking great but the one bit of the project I tried to do myself is now awful and I’ve created so much work.

I’ve been googling and it looks like the best approach might be white spirits and sanding, but just wondered if anyone had made the same mistake as me and had to undo a project like this?

thanks

white spirits
rub off with a rag or use a scouring pad if necessary

No point using sand paper. It will just clog up.

you can also buy purpose made wax removers. By Liberon etc

Have you a photo? I hope you haven’t done too much.
I agree with white spirit. Do it as soon as possible as the wax will still be soft (hopefully!).

Wire wool will be your friend here, with white spirit. You’ll need plenty of it. Medium grade. Spindles won’t take too long if it you fold it round and see-saw it, if you know what I mean, or wrap round and scrub. Bit of a pain but doable.

You can chalk paint over it if it’s not too thick?

Thank you everyone for your help! I was in a real panic. We used white spirits the next day with wire wool and it came right off - probably as it was still soft.

thank goodness! Now we’ve chalk painted the bannister and will start over with a different product. Phew!

Keep the layers nice and thin
