Cost of removing a gas fire and reopening chimney breast

Anyone had a gas fire removed and the wall behind it knocked out to open up the original chimney breast? I don’t want a log burner or anything, just to put an electric stove into the gap. Not sure how much it would cost, have tried a google but didn’t really get an answer.
thanks in advance x

Hi I had a plumber remove a gas fire last year, it was pretty straight forward, gas just needed capping off. It wasn’t much maybe £50ish? Does the wall need knocking open? Mine had open space behind the hideous gas fire

Cheers - I think it will probably be an open space behind the fire but won’t know till it’s out. I’m hoping it’s just the original brick, that would be great x

It was 10 years ago, but it cost us £2K to do this. That was in Berkshire. I gather what drives the cost is the state of the chimney.

Not sure what is behind it till it comes out I guess. Hopefully it’ll be the original brick fireplace x

Do it! Get rid of the hideous fire then worry about what’s behind it 😆

We paid £80 for a gas safe guy to remove the old gas fire here in 2024. Everything else (we tiled ours) we did ourselves so costs were minimal.

If it's hideous and it's coming out anyway then getting a gas registered plumber to remove it and cap off the gas is no regrets.

You will also have to have the chimney cleaned, possibly have a cowl/cap removed off the top of the chimney [we did and I understand it's normal for gas fires] and the chimney assessed to see if there is a risk of leaks into the rest of the house. If it's not in a good condition you may have to have the chimney lined which can be expensive but a chimney sweep will give you a good idea of cost.
