Advice for repairing hall and stairs safely

Hoping someone more experienced than me can tell me the logistics for fixing my hallway/stairs. We have some badly broken/seasawing floorboards that need replacing/screwing down. One flight of stairs also creaks horribly, so we want to try and improve that. Carpet is ancient, so naturally you'd think lift it, fix everything, put new carpet down. But how do we do that with a 2 and 5 year old if all the carpet grippers are exposed?
We've done it in other rooms but could just close the door and tell them not to go in. Obviously everyone needs to use the stairs and hall. And if the other rooms are anything to go by, the floorboards will also be full of screws and staples sticking out.
For the hallway I thought maybe we lift it, fix, put loosely back down in two sections. But can't really do that with the stairs.
Or do we just rip out all the carpet grippers and pay for new ones when the new carpet gets put down?
Does temporary cover exist that would protect their feet? So not just a dustsheet I guess.

So not just a dustsheet I guess.

Not a dustsheet or anything loose, that's dangerous on stairs.

How long do you expect the job to take? You might need to make sure they wear shoes and supervise them on the stairs. Put up a stairgate.

Do you have a downstairs loo?

Rip up the carpet grippers, they are £7.50 for a pack of 8 from B and Q

When we did similar we had a company do it for us. It took one day so was easy to keep the children out of their way (not so much the cats who were desperate to 'help'). The carpet fitters recommended the floor repair company.
