Would you install air conditioning in a dormer loft conversion?

We are getting a dormer loft conversion in the summer. 1930s semi-detached so will become 3 storeys.
In two minds on whether we pay extra for aircon.
Anyone who has or hasn't installed aircon and whether they regret it?

Yep. Loft conversions, whatever the shape, always tend to become very hot. I think it’s something to do with them being right below the roof.

Soontobe60 · 23/05/2026 08:00

Our loft gets hot but we leave the blinds down on the Velux windows, and keep them open, so it’s not so much of an issue.

Notmyreality · 23/05/2026 08:01

Yes I would. I’d put it in the whole house if I could.

Tigerbalmshark · 23/05/2026 08:02

In this climateI’d install aircon anywhere you can tbh. I have never met anyone who regrets having it. And if you do, you can just turn it off.

We had a loft conversion added on a 1930’s semi and added air conditioning. It faces south, gets incredibly warm & was definitely the best thing we did!

Roselilly36 · 23/05/2026 08:12

It will be the best money you ever spend, many years ago we had a property with two dormer bedrooms, boiling hot in summer, freezing in winter.

Duvetdayneeded · 23/05/2026 08:15

Yes!!!!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 23/05/2026 08:18

Yes ours is bloody boiling

inmyhair · 23/05/2026 08:27

Yes definately. Who wants to wake up feeling hot, groggy and hungover and then have to go and do a days work.

CraftyGin · 23/05/2026 08:32

We have air conditioning in our loft conversion.

It heats as well as cools. It means we don't need to give up wall space for radiators, and don't need to worry about the boiler/pump.

The cost isn't huge in the scheme of the whole project.

Niceonegeezer · 23/05/2026 08:32

We had ducting put in for a portable air con unit that we just wheel out the storage and connect up when its hot as we couldn't quite justify the expense of full air con. Not needed to use it yet (only completed in March) but I think this might be the week...

Fortheloveofpenguins · 23/05/2026 08:34

Do it. You won’t regret it.

TallSturdyGirl · 23/05/2026 08:37

I would say no but thats because I hate aircon. It makes me feel ill.

Imgoingtobefree · 23/05/2026 08:45

We did a loft conversion in a Victorian terrace. They do tend to get hot because of the high insulation required by building regs.

We put in a ceiling fan which worked really well, but we also had an opening windows on front and back of the roof/dormer to allow airflow.

Hidefromthecow · 23/05/2026 08:46

We have it and it’s great.

doistayordoigo · 23/05/2026 08:54

We're in a converted bungalow that has dormers on 3/4 of the roof and have never felt the need for aircon, the rooms just function like any normal bedroom. I guess it would depend on the price difference, but I certainly don't think it's any more necessary than in any other room.

Me too!

Yes I’d defintely add air con to a loft room but I hate being too hot.

RandomMess · 23/05/2026 09:35

Where you live is also a consideration, north of England Near East or West coast, or Scotland probably not. Midlands, Manchester, South or SE yes.

No clue about Wales or NI!

This.
My attic bedroom is hotter than hell in summer. I have a portable AC unit but proper built in would be much 8.

whirlyhead · 23/05/2026 10:07

I have air con throughout my house but I never use it as i installed ceiling fans and just run them all summer. I hate air con!

When I had a loft conversion it did get roasting hot so I reckon air con is worth while getting in that case.

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/05/2026 10:09

Yes, because heat rises. It's science, innit?

PancakeCloud · 23/05/2026 10:11

Yes

Papyrophile · 23/05/2026 16:50

PiL's house near Eastbourne had the spare bedroom in the dormer, and it was hotter than Hades unless there was a sea breeze. Then it was just uncomfortably hot... Definitely have one of the heating/cooling units, because it got very chilly in winter too. You won't regret it... plus windows that open too.

Added final sentence.

JohnofWessex · 23/05/2026 17:02

What about a unit that will cool in summer and be a heat pump in winter?
